I spent about $1500 putting most of this together:
AMD 3800+ X2
Epox 9NPA Ultra mobo
1 GB Corsair XMS RAM
BFG 7800GTX
300 GB SATA, 80 GB + 100 GB PATA HDs
Got a dual layer dvd burner, 5.1 speakers, 19" monitor and a thermaltake tsunami dream to complete that too. It's my baby

Gforce 6600 GT
90 gig hardrive and Logitech mx518 mouse
(dunno where this goes but it's on my mother board box; PCI-Express/Dual Channel/DDR400)

AMD athlon 64 3400+
1024 mb ddr2
ati radeon (not sure which one) 128 megs
200 gb HD
I know this is kinda crappy but im thinking about buying CS:S so do you think it will be enough to run it smoothly even on minimum graphics?

It will run just fine .
Medium graphics power will do.

Yes, as chris said, it will run fun.
I have that setup, but with an x850XT [pcix] 256mb and I can run all max settings beautifully, so at medium settings you should be fine ^^

In todays games medium settings are pretty decent. Yes having the highest ones is sweet...but really it is just finer detail....medium settings still show awesome graphics...better then high end just a few years ago...
Take that from a Dood that had to deal with simple sprite graphics for years...dreaming of rigs like today....

I just finished my rig.
Chaintech 9CJS Mobo with 7.1 channel integrated sound
Pentium 2.4MHz with 800MHz FSB
2 sticks of 256mb OCZ
2 sticks of 512mb OCZ
40Gb Seagate 7200 rpm IDE
160Gb Seagate 7200 rpm IDE
XFX 6800 Vanilla with the pipes and shader unlocked
Ultra 500W PSU with the Modular Connect stuff
NEC 21" CRT/ Gateway 17" CRT
Logitech USB Optical
Dell Standard Keyboard
This machine is far from top notch, but considering it has been running over two years, it is pretty much overkill.
My next rig will be one of these PCI-E Dual Vieocard Dual Processor monsters.

MIne i recently created this rig about 6 months ago!!!:
1.AMD DUAL CORE 4800
2.3GIGS OCZ MEMORY
3.DUAL 78OOGTX PCI-E
4.DUAL RAPTOR 74GIG RAID 0 10,000RPM
5.DUAL iBM DESKSTARS 1TERA BYTE RAID 1 7200 RPM
6.AUDIGY 2ZS/BREAK OUT BOX
7.WAVE MASTER CASE
8.QUIET COOL 850 SLI PSU
9.4 20MM FANS
10.LIQUID COOLING ALX
11.WIRE MANGEMENT
12.DUAL PLEXTOR P7-A DVD/COMBOS
13.AND 3 23" VIEWSONICS 6MS/800:1 CONTRAST monitors
14.ASUS MOBO SLI
This is my general gaming rig, i play BF2, battlefront 2, Cs.s, quake 4, and a few other online games, i know this is overkill for GW, but dam if they would only support 8x or higher AA, the graphics would be even more insane lets hope the expansion pack will allow for higher details settings for ultra high performance rigs!!!
Oh my rig is completely stock!!! no overclockin needed!!!!
Thanks,
|
how much did this cost you?
even at newegg i would expect you to spend 4,000+

Wow, you guys have some crazy machines. It makes me jealous.
I play GW on a stock Dell XP400....just an all-purpose workhorse computer:
Intel Pentium D 830
2GB dual channel DDR2 SDRAM
256MB PCI Expressx16 nVidia 6800
250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
16xDVD-ROM Drive + 16xDVD+/-
Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic
ATI TV Wonder Elite
300GB Maxtor External HD (USB)
19" Dell Utra Sharp
Windows XP 2005 MCE
I am buying parts for a dedicated gaming machine (prices in quotes are Newegg as of 12/30/05):
ASUS Vento 3600 ATX Mid Tower - Green ($139.00)
ASUS A8N32 - SLI Deluxe ($245)
eVGA 256-P2-N518 Geforce 7800GT (just one card for now - $379)
PC Power & Cooling SLI-PFC ATX 12V 510W ($219)
Athlon 64 x2 4400 Toledo ($497)
Corsair XMS-3500LL Pro (2 x 1GB modules) ($296)
2xWestern Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 7200RPM SATA ($155.50)
ASUS IDE DRW Combo Drive ($48.99)
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum ($202)
Actually, I could really use advise, particularly regarding cooling and optical devices. Also, I'm wondering if I should go with a RAID_0 set up.
So far I've only paid for the CPU and the memory (MoBo is out of stock at Newegg). So everything else is negotiable. I've got about $3000 to spend.
Easy

DEX, mate you dont need equal matching sticks of ram for dual channel, this PC my old one has 3 sticks(2 512's and 1gig stick), The 2 512's are in the dual channel slots, and the 1gig one is in the last slot, it works fine in dual channel, just as long as 2 sticks are the same it's fine, Well it works on my old Asus A8V...
|
ok... REALLY sorry to quote such an old post... but i REALLY cant let this fly
first off, Crossfire doesnt need 2 identical cards true, but if you bought 2 Crossfire compatible cards you'll get jack. Crossfire encourages slavery, as there are special 'Master Cards' that corespond with your standard 'Slave Card'. (eg one standard x1800XT + x1800XT Master Card = CROSSFIRE)
My RiG:
Asus A8N-SLI Mobo
Athlon 64 3800+ (Stock cooling unfortunately )
Patriot DDR400 1GB (2x512MB stix)
Leadtek Winfast 7800GT
Maxtor 160GB SATA (im no power-downloader, so i dont need nything more really...)
Gigabyte 3D Aurora Case (this is darh sh!tz)
Enermax 535W Whisper II (2x PCIe power cablez)
Samsung SyncMaster 740N (17" only... 1 dead pixel as far as i know)
Logitech G5 Laser Gaming Mouse (this is darh sh!tz as well)
Logitech Internet Pro Desktop (i use the keyboard only)
oh and if u were wondering why im only using one 7800GT, itz coz im 14 and i have no spare money. my RiG was designed for SLI, but alas, with no income im afraid my eyes will never grace SLI beauty for years.

here's my overclock project.. you just need any amd64 and o/c- I scored higher on 3dmark than guys running the x2 and better cards with a 50 dollar chip good deal and it's very stable (this is with no voltage mods).. me and a friend been runnin some tests- it looks like cache really does'nt play a role on the 64 gaming wise.. that memory controller is so fast it's really more on the video card and the bus- a little overclock and your rig will whip
240 fsb
550/550 on a x800
mem timings are 2.5,3,3,5- not even the best =]
this is the stuff only peeps on a budget would know.. everyone else can spend 6-10x more for the same performance

Sorry mate, there is something wrong with your screenshots, Correct me if i'm wrong but when did semprons use skt 940, socket 940 was obsolete way before semprons were introduced.

Anyone can learn to overclock their hardware...there are plenty of resources around the internet one can use to glean whatever knowledge they need.
Since 3DMark is single-threaded, the X2 isn't going to make any difference. You're basically just comparing clockspeeds (as long as the L2 is the same size, which won't make THAT much of a difference either...most games just don't utilize big caches), which you can get pretty high with the right CPU core stepping/family, decent memory, and the right motherboard.
I played with overclocking for many years. Eventually, if you're like me, you get busy with other things in your life and you just don't have time for it anymore. I guess it's nice to get 'something for nothing', but now my time is more precious than my money, and I'd prefer to build a nice stable stock system that's never down and runs nice and cool. Although, I'm certainly not paying 6-10x as much.
@4runner: I sometimes play GW with a few gamers I know in their 60's as well. I know what you mean, though. I'm only 30 and I'm already older than 90% of the people I meet in-game.

Never overclock a machine that you depend on for daily usage, or one that you need working to stay sane.
Here's my box. Built it last year, no overclocking. I plan to upgrade in the coming summer or so:
Code:
P4 2.80C (Northwood ftw, 512K L2) on an Albatron 865PE mobo
Geforce 6800 AGP (128 MB, 12pp 6vp)
1 GB Geil dual-channel PC3200
80 GB WD Caviar
SB Live! 24-bit
Windows 2000 Pro
Antec Sonata w/ TP 2.0 380 W
17" TFT monitor - the Fry's special :D 12x10, no dead pixels
Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers
Sc-940 isn't obsolete, Opterons still use it.

Same here. I am 50 yrs old. It does not matter to me what your age is as long as you act mature. Heck...I enjoy playing the game with PieXags...there is a youngen that is more mature then allot of older folks.
I still get asked in game from time to time...."Wow...you're so OLD...why do you play games...?" I just laugh and tell them that I was playing games before your parents even thought about having you....
