Glow graphic glitch and Loading screen glitch
Hey all,
I recently built a new computer that is vastly superior to my older one but I'm having strange graphic issues that I did not have before with the MUCH older and crappier graphics card.
The card I use now is the GeForce 7800 GT. Before the most recent patch there was a glitch with terrain textures but it was fixed. However, ever since playing Guild Wars on this new computer it seems that the "glow" effect that exists in this game sometimes causes some kind of translucent paper after effect.
What I mean is, in certain environments which cause alot of "glow" effect on characters and such there is what appears to be a translucent film like graphic on things like hair, and capes, that althought subtle, gets irritating after a while. It's almost like I'm seeing some sort of polygon portion of things that I normally should not be because they SHOULD be 100% transparent but the "glow" is bleeding into them causing them to show.
Another problem, which really isn't a problem but more of an annoying thing to see, is that on loading screens right before the screen sort of refreshes from game to loading screen or loading screen to game there is a very quick and jarring effect that looks like when you degauss a screen. It wasn't like that with my old really crappy computer.
Anyone know the fixes for this?
I ALMOST think that maybe it could be my monitor is not good enough for what my graphic card can now put out.
I'm not as tech saavy as I used to be. Anyone can shed any light on this?
Thanks

What driver version are you using? Latest driver doesn't mean the best driver, you might want to try downgrading them a notch.

I'm a doof and don't really know the exact version number drivers I have recently installed. Whatever the most current one is.
The drivers before the most current ones from NVIDIA had the same glow/degauss-effect issues PLUS the terrain texture issue.
The latest drivers have fixed the terrain issue but not the glow and degauss-effect issues
I'm sorry I cannot be more descriptive, I should post screenshots or something but I'm at work :P

I have 77.77 atleast, and I don't have any problems. My card is 6800GT. You can snatch that version from here.
To see what version you have, right click on empty spot on your desktop, select properties. Then click on Settings-tab, and hit on Advanced button. There should be a tab 'GeForce 7800 GT' for you, with a little NVidia icon, select it, and the driver version should be on the first page, 'ForceWare version: xx.xx'
77.77 is the first version where 7800 is supported so it might not be the best.. worth the try tho.

I guess I will try that when I get home.
Thanks, I hope this alleviates these minor glitches that for some reason REALLY irritate me ( i swear i can be so obsessive compulsive about video game graphic issues ).
Thanks again.

You know what, I've noticed glow effects in ALL my games are seemingly effected by this.
I wonder if it is just a driver issue.
It is driving me batty for some reason that a card that is so much better is having this kind of quality issue for whatever reason. Like, I play warcraft 3 alot as well and the glow under the hero's isn't smooth, I can see clear cut circles of "glow" that should be blended better and it looks crappy.
Hrm, and I've been told more than once now to try older version of drivers.

actully it could be the video card it self even tho its brand new ppl tend to still get DOA's (Dead on Arival) from time to time its actully not dead but maybe the part of the card thats supposed to render that graphic is dead i have had the problem before i just RMA'ed the card and when i got the new one back it never happened again

I doubt it's the actual card. I do have games that are MORE graphic intensive than Guild Wars that do run properly.
I'm thinking it's a driver issue like that damn terrain texture issue I had before the recent GW patch.

it dosen't have to be more GFX intensive just that type of GFX that it is trying to render it is more likely a driver issue just throwing out the idea it could also be the card if you try everything else you could try

I will keep that in mind EiS. Thank you for the idea. I didn't think it could be the actual card. I honestly NEVER toyed with the drivers. When I installed the card I used the drivers that came with it, then updated them, had the same problems, updated them again recently and lost the terrain issue. I have a feeling I need to use the 7x.xx drivers as I checked as well on the NVIDIA forums and there are lots of people complaining that the more recent driver downloads for the 6800 and 7800 + cards are having all sorts of weird subtle issues with graphics processing in various games.
I'm going to try the 77.77 drivers that Kaguya suggested as I also read somewhere else that those are the most reliable drivers for my card and the games I'm currently playing.

Do you have DirectX 9.0c? And also if you go on Start, Run, dxdiag, OK, Display, are all the DirectX Features enabled?

that paper like glow you are talking about only apprears while inside towns and its normal. I believe that because the game uses lower quality textures on people in towns those that "glow" is where a different part is rendered EX where the hair stops and it changes to the face mesh.

What the hell are you talking about Frosty..?
You don't glows on any of your characters ever, you should only see glows on some scenery and boss monsters.

He prolly means the glow that everything has, maybe it's more of a shine.. Try with graphics at high quality, then drop a notch of two. The game overall turns darker because the shiny-pretty-glow-effect gets disabled.
pretty glow off ---------------------------------- pretty glow on

Nope. It's a glow. Try wearing as white armor as you can, and enter Ring of Fire mission. The effect is very intrusive there, atleast my silver-dyed Censor armor on my monk turned almost completely white with the shine. Had to run to a shadow or switch to 1st person view so it wouldn't look so annoying
On that example image, the effect is most clear on the edge of the axe, it throws out a glow above it.
Suppose someone who has played around with GFX engines could say what the effect is, but you're sorta right as it is a graphics effect, only at 2 highest settings have that, and I think need to have Post-Processing turned on.
Or, just tested it, switch Post-Processing on/off. Toggles the effect as well.

Thought you didn't see it
The glow is quite clear on the Fiery sword, and pretty much around the armor in general
