Norton is great at blocking stuff, but it requently blocks waaay too much. msn messenger, guild wars....even shared printers. it can be a pain trying to get around it. plus, when you run the scan, you might as well go watch a movie or something. your computer becomes basically useless. im not a huge fan of norton, but i admit it is very good at blocking things

Been using Avast for over a year and am loving it. AVG slowed down defrags a ton when I tried it out. So I suspect it impacts disk performance a lot.
