what is the difference between pci-e apg and pci? all i want is a very good 512mb video card. and which is best 2nd best and last.

Well, put it this way;

PCI
One of the first, if not 'the' first? Integrated not included I think Graphics Card slot types, oldest of all, which is way out of date.

AGP
The middle-aged, commonly ish used, I use AGP at the moment, ATI and nVidia have both released 1 of there top-notch cards which were PCI-E to AGP, the ATI X1800 I think and the nVidia 7800.

PCI-E
The latest of them all, and what most of the latest cards are made for now.

Soo, 'least best' to 'most best', left to right;
PCI, AGP, PCI-E

By the way, just because it's 512, doesn't mean it's the best of the best.

A 256 can have a better Clock Speed and Memory Speed than a 512.

the 256 and 512 are physically fixed ammounts of ram and cannot be changed.

nor can you add to a 256 to bring it up to 512

OC has nothing to do with those figures at all

Lovitar is absolutely correct. Also, games now a days do not use 512mb of memory. 256 is fine. So unless the sound of 512mb of ram will be enough to make you pay DOUBLE the price of 256 for the gain of 1fps, then go right ahead.

Also, AGP runs at 4x/8x, you card will use 8x most likely. PCI-E runs at 16x. Cards currently can only shell out 6x-8x. PCI-E is more for upgradeability, but if you have atleast 1000$ to shell on a 512mb memory vid card and be able to swap out the mobo, assuming you have an AGP 8x Slot, then I encourage you to buy a PCI-E 16. However, if you don't have that money. Buy a 7800GS. nVidia already went back on their word saying that they would not release any AGP card for their 7800 series, so have fun with whatever you do.

PS EVGA if you buy a 7800gs, im stucked with a screwed up XFX 7800gt. Dam idiots with a 4 pin molex connector on a vid card =\

they all come with that molex (sometimes 2 of them)

evem my little 6600GT needs to be fed the extra juice

and any time you make a major upgrade in a power hungry device best make sure your power supply can handle it.

that means a good quality one from a name brand and not some 680 watt job for 20 bucks from geeks r us

May I suggest the Hiper TypeR range of PSU's! Absolutely outstanding peices of kit, SLi certified, twin fan cooling system and pumping out 630W peak power. All for the not so princely sum of £52. Not to mention the way all the cables are connected and kept out of the ay, thus increasing airflow in your system even more.

I swear by them!

i am assuming that they are British?

i have had good luck with Antec Pure Power series but they are a bit old at only 380W and 430 W but still suit my needs.

and my budget as well

Yeah, they're a specialist company but gaining ground on the big boys pretty quickly. Infact they're already being copied. Here's the one I have at the moment :-

when u put a 4 pin molex onto a 7800gt that needs a 6 pin power connector, it screws the card over lol

actually pci isnt the oldest of them all... there was the isa bus before pci. thats besides the point though.

OP: you need to let us know if your motherboard has pci-e slot or an agp slot as im pretty sure it wont have both. then go search the internet review sites for graphics card reviews. pick the ones that perform best in the games you like to play then start shopping.

PCI-E also has the benefit of upgrading one video card solution to a dual setup. Only certain motherboards support this feature though.

The main difference between all those interfaces you listed is the amount of bandwidth that is provided for the data to and from the graphics card and the way in which that data is delivered. PCI-E, the newest standard, came out with around 40+GB bandwidth and is increasing. PCI-E is comprised of a link, which is in turn comprised of "lanes". PCI-E x16 means there are 16 parallel lanes that link the card to your motherboard for data flow. In short, buy a PCI-E card. PCI is dead as dead can be and AGP is on its way. Cheers.

MY QUESTION IS.............

why do you have your heart set on that oddball MB instead of a quality newer one?

if you are getting a new motherboard why get that..............one instead of another that is better and costs less and is available everywhere?
