Sound effects not working
Recently my sound effects in Guild Wars stopped working. The music and the background audio both work fine; however, the sound effects are completely gone regardless of how I change by GW settings themselves. I haven't changed any hardware at the time of the problem, and although I can't be 100% sure, I'm fairly certain that it coincided with one of our many updates.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do? Like I said, all sound on the computer itself, and in all other aspects of Guild Wars is working. I just don't have sound effects.

Grab Direct X 9c here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Also what sound card you do you have? There are users that are having sound issues after they updated GW to factions. Let us know if this fix's it or not.

I already had the most recent Direct X installed, but tried redownloading and installing it anyways. It had no effect.
I'm using a laptop with a built-in soundcard (SigmaTel C-Major? or is that the driver...?), and/or a Plantronics DSP 500 headset which comes with its own build-in soundcard as well. Both of these two hare having the exact same problem.
Edit: All my other games' sound effects are working, including the ones which use DX9. Also, it can't be a sound card issue with my headset, since when used with another computer, the sound effects come through just fine. That makes it appear to be a problem with my Guild Wars itself...

I do agree with you it's the patch / changes.
This may be worth a shot:
Other thing I can think of it's corruption of file in the gw.dat. Maybe try the -repair switch (http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=94814)
and maybe a re-install of GW if that doesn't work.

have an sb audigy 2s z, no sound effects - tried reinstalling dx9, no luck...dxdiag says all aspects of sound are fine (even ran all the tests).
going to try the repair switch to see if that helps, will let you know
-repair did nothing, but when i drop quality to lowest i can hear everything again, so i guess problem solved (for now)

It's a problem with these latest releases of Guild Wars. I've noticed over time some effects will just stop, or sound funny. Such as the Heal Sig, or casting spells.

I'm having trouble with my 4 speaker setup. Windows is configured to a 4 speaker setup, but it seems GW sees it as a 5 speaker setup, because monsters / soundeffects right in front of me are almost inaudible. If I turn the camera a bit to the left or right, or turn around completely, everything sounds fine...
I think GW thinks I have a centerspeaker, which I don't....

Update: actually have found that if quality is kept to 50% or less I can hear the effects when casting/wanding/etc, they still dont sound quite right though. I will have to try to update my Audigy drivers, maybe there is some small problem with my cuurent drivers being able to interpret direct x 9c?

Okay, my problem's been figured out and fixed. It turned out to be a corruption of about 8 of the DX files which made Guild Wars unable to use DX9, despite the fact that some other programs were using it. The corruption of the files was making them un-writable and thus reinstalling was just leaving the buggers there instead of overwriting them. I ended up having to boot into safe mode to finally be able to delete the blasted things, but once they were out it's been smooth sailing.
I'm so glad to have sound again.

updates
go to microsoft.com, do a search for DirectX and download it, also do driver updates for your sound card.
