Virus or Big... can't help but LoL. That threat is present for any system no matter how much is spent on it.
And all systems (again regardless of price) can be protected by keeping a good AV solution up to date and by using a good firewall (hardware being the best solution there, my opinion).

(p4 3.73g ee, 9800pro 256,2 gigs ram, raptors raid o, cooler master case, turbo cool 650, plextor drivex2, abit p4 board audgigy 2zs etc, etc, etc) 2 1/2 year old rig! Still rocks and still going its my back up rig as well as my dell xps laptop for portable gaming!!
Peace
SOmetimes money isnt everything, im an enthusiast, i enjoy high end Stuff, and would gladly pay more if need be.
As for virus Funny, but i dont surf the web on this rig, dont d/l anything and strictly a gaming machine!!! Virus dont concerns me, ALL out performance does, with reliablitly!!

No offense dude, but I don't think anyone really cares. All you're doing is bragging about spending an extensive amount of money on a computer that will be outdated in a year or two. Do you just want attention? Is that the purpose of your postings and constantly bragging about something? You paid way too much, that doesn't seem impressive to anyone. The more you post about it, the less intelligent you look. You paid an extensive amount for a brand name and an over rated machine. There's nothing to be proud of about that; when you could have made it yourself, bought all the parts and had someone else build it for you, or even bought the same type of machine that from a company that does custom builds for less. Even Gateway probably could have made a machine that matches it and cost you at least $2,000 less.
Please do us a favor and stop posting, or perhaps a mod would be so kind as to lock this thread?

its advisable to run matching sticks of memory, 2 1 gig sticks are better than 1 gig + 2 512 although im not entirely sure.
the 1st run i made it scored 19,000 something, re-ran at various vid setting s and scored changed alot! not exactly sure what idid.
also try aquamark, cool video for the test.,

Well that's interesting... just a brief descript of the major components in my desktop, this being the one I built as opposed to my notebook.
AMD64 4000+
Corsair 2x512 2-2-2-5 RAM (with LEDs)
Asus X1800XL PCIe
What else effects performance... umm...
Catalyst 6.3 drivers
DirectX 9.0 December 2005 (as I recall)
Haven't run a benchmarking program lately, but in Guild Wars using the in game FPS measurement I never see it below 60, and that includes the busiest towns. And that is at 1600 x 1200 with everything I can find set to max.
Addition: in the end anything above ... oh say around 40fps doesn't really matter anyway as it cannot be noticed.

Even though I would have built mine, that is a kickass rig.
Built in water cooling is a lot better than hand done because often things break and ruin parts, with a warranty he won't have that problem.
Only change I would have is 7900GT's instead of the 7800GT's. But does Alienware even offer those yet?

Not that I know of. Just as long as they are both matching sets and have good timings, especially for dual channel. The difference is nominal. I know that it was true for Athlon XPs but for A64s its pretty much moot. 2x512 if you don't use memory hog programs. 2x1gb for extra headroom or memory heavy programs like photoshop. But then again, if design proggies Photoshop is your top priority, then 4x1gb in single channel will do the program justice. Since Photoshop can run into 200MBs just for a couple of layers and its easy to dig into the memory with big PSDs.

Well if you are getting around 60fps with 1600x1200 with 4x anti and everything maxed then it has to be a ram issue with my computer because our computers are simlar since i believe guildwars doesn't use both cores. I am going to take out the 512 sticks and run 3dmark05 again.

a very well respected computer maker............ LOL..
Dell Bought Alienware, Dell Sucks and Alienware USED TO BE respected in my books..
don't believe your "5000 dollar" computer is just a dell with some fancy lookin case.. check this.
http://www.theregister.com/2006/03/2...uys_alienware/
Me personally though, i think it was stupid to spend 5k on a system when you could easily get one the same specs for about 2k - 3k cheaper.

Agreed they are so over priced, but good if you have cash to spare and dont want to take the risk and build a water cooled setup yourself and have a good warranty. (are the warrantys still as good now dell own them?)

So you are running 3 sticks of ram in 3 of the 4 slots?
Dual channel needs 2 matching sticks in each pair of slots (or just 1 pair)
Take the 1 gig stick out and get the 2 512 sticks setup for dual channel and see if that helps.

It's not my system, so it really doesn't make any difference to me. However I've seen other people make this blanket statement as well. Perhaps you should take your own advice and read the article. It quite clearly states that Alienware will continue to be it's own business following the same protocol it's been using all this time. That means that they are not Dell systems with a rebadged fancy look to them. They will continue to use name brand high end components when creating systems. The only thing new is that the profit goes to Dell now.
Dell purchased there way into the high end niche market, that's all it is.

Actually, they are still Dell systems. Dell still owns Alienware, thus Alienware is a subsidiary of Dell. Ever heard of a subsidiary? No? Here's a Wikipedia definition.

Subsidiaries are separate, distinct legal entities for the purposes of taxation and regulation. They are distinct from divisions, which are entities fully integrated within the main company, and not legally or otherwise distinct from it.
An operating subsidiary is a business term frequently used within the United States railroad industry. In the case of a railroad, it refers to a company that is a subsidiary but operates with its own identity, locomotives and rolling stock.
In contrast, a non-operating subsidiary would exist on paper only (i.e. stocks, bonds, articles of incorporation) and would use the identity and rolling stock of the parent company.
