I don't think that kind of thing would require a firmware upgrade necessarily.
Can you log in to the router and check the settings to see if anything has changed, or maybe reset it back to default operation settings? Check your connection settings as well in the network connections, maybe create a different connection. After that go to the cmd prompt while connected and type ipconfig /all and see if you have a designated IP address, subnet, DNS, etc. and try to ping some IP's.
