I get this message sporaticly when surfing so I just check the box so I can go on normally, but it happens evey time I start a browser (IE or Firefox). I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix this.

What's really stumping me though is I think the latest version of Flash is corrupt or something. When I download it (it takes less than 1 sec. even though it's close to a meg in size), and then run it, the install file displays the progress bar to load the install wizard and then just craps out on me. When I check my running processes, it shows that it's running...WTF?

I have the latest version of Shockwave installed and my graphics card drivers are up to date. I reinstalled XP Pro about a month and a half ago. I made a separate 10 gig partition for XP and only install programs that are frequently used with the OS like Windows Updates, browser add-ons like Shockwave and Flash, Firefox, and WindowBlinds. All my other programs reside in another 50 gig partition, and all my images, music, and videos are stored in the other 46 gigs.

Can anyone help me please?

You could try installing/reinstalling it from there, you might have to go to the plugins folder and delete the one currently installed in there.

The download is corrupt. However FF keeps everything cached for a while. That's why it's only taking a second to download, it's just using the cache. Clear your cache and then redownload it.

I did that stuff and I'm still getting the message. I can't figure out how to uninstall a plugin other than going to the plugins folder and deleting the files there. It doesn't show up in Add/Remove programs and I there isn't any plugins menu option in FF...

go to the c:\program files\mozilla firefox\plugins directory (or whatever drive letter it's installed on) and delete the flash file in there, then reinstall. The one I did just to test it out had a picture icon with an F in it that said "get flash" reinstalled, and it works fine. You may want to then double click on that same icon I told you to delete, after reinstalling, and it will run a self update. After the update, you'll be able to find it in add/remove programs if uninstalling needs to be done.

It didn't work. I was able to delete it but this is what happens (as I explained in my original post) when I try and reinstall Flash.

See what I mean about the install file problem?

Edit: I didn't see about the part of going back in to the folder and running the program. I did it and lo and behold...it still is not working.

The file I deleted has been installed and works fine, but my original problem still exists.

hmm, can you end the process of install_flash_play... and try it again? I'm not sure why that would be stuck in there as a process running. Are you using anything that is currently using flash while your trying to do this? Try closing all apps open before doing this.

I've done that too. Actually I've tried all the obvious stuff like that. I'm usually a whiz when it comes to computer stuff, but this kind of crap hppens to me all to often. Maybe I should just save all my bookmarks to some folder and uninstall FF. I'll give that a go.

Well, I guess the last thing I would check is msconfig and see if it's starting up automatically for some reason as a process and perhaps the system information startup processes under software and services.

Well that really doesn't have anything to do with it since Flash isn't a process. Oh and I just reinstalled FF and I'm still getting the message. I thought maybe the way FF was interfacing with Flash might have become corrupt and that's why I uninstalled it, restarted the comp, and reinstalled it. But to no avail. Back to square one.

It's running in the background from your screen shot as a process though, "install_flash_play..." That's what I'm not really understanding. I know it's not normally a process.

Well see, that's what happens when I run it. The Wizard loading progress bar shows up and once it's done the rest of the install never shows up and the only way I know it's running is by looking at the task manager. It never gets past that. I'm thinking the actual install file they have for download is coorupt and I have to wait till they release a new version.

But now it should be in the add/remove programs so you can uninstall listed as macromedia flash player 8, is it not?

Yeah. It's there. I uninstalled it, reinstalled, and restarted the comp. Seems like no matter how I uninstall/reinstall it, Flash is still corrupt.

On a side note, I think this is the most active thread on GWG right now. lol

strange... Must be a corrupt file, but it's strange that it installs just fine on mine. There's some entries in the registry in MozillaPlugins for macromedia flash player 8, that would be my next stop. After removing the entries, reboot, then reinstall the plugin of course. There's also this little gem to think about C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll

I actually just downloaded a stand-alone installer of the latest version. It was 4.4 meg and seemed to install just fine. I'll see in a little bit, but after I finish something up on the comp first.

Edit: Nope. Still doesn't fix the problem. Oh well...Looks like I'll have to just put up with that message window every time I start a new instance of FF.

It doesn't get past copying KillBrowser.exe...
I'll see if uninstalling Flash and getting rid of any lingering registry entries helps.

Edit: Not even uninstalling both shockwave and flash completely helped. I even got FF to the point where its shows the green puzzle piece to download the plugin. I installed it and it's still giving me the message. Grr. I guess we should just drop this whole thread.
