Unhappy high CPU usage

when i log in on my computer and everything loads non of the programs work because CPU usage on the program "explorer" is 99% and all the other programs have no enough recources to run it takes about 5 min for firefox to load for example. After i stop explorer in the task manager all the menu and icons disapear then i can run all the programs run just fine through "Run" option in the task manager. Do you guys have any idea on how to fix this?

I'd check for viruses and spyware. explorer.exe is the windows shell, and it should rarely hog all your CPU cycles, and never for an extended period of time.

I have to agree. If Explorer is running 99%, then you have some sort of "Malware". A lot of these new virii/malware are very good at slipping past a lot of the scanners. My suggestion is to do an internet search for a program called HijackThis and download/install it into it's own folder. Run the program and select "Do a system scan and save log file". Then go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum22.html and paste a copy of the log file into a new post. Someone will review the log and help you remove the malware from your machine. Also make sure you give them some info as to what the problem is, ie. explorer running at 99%. Be forewarned, these people are volunteers, so this will take several days to complete, but they are very good at removbing malware.

norton wont be helping you out, get yourself a quality virus checker, i.e. not norton.

Few other questions-

How much RAM do you have? In Task Manager, what does it show under Physical Memory? Total/Available?

How many "startup" programs do you have running? Number of icons in the system tray at the bottom, by the clock?
