Sometimes I use my laptop to play Guild Wars, sometimes I use my brother's computer. My laptop tends to have a lot of lag issues, but they're not internet-related. My brother's computer is sweet, he almost always loads first, except when we have internet lag.
A couple weeks ago, I was doing Arborstone on my brother's comp, and I was receiving 5-minute lag (I do /dance, and my char starts dancing 5 minutes later) and I crashed 4 or 5 times. I switched to my laptop, and even though the game didn't run as fast, I had a perfect connection.
Alliance battles are pretty laggy, I think it's because of high internet use (There's 23 other people, some might use Dial Up) and high CPU use (if there's 4 MM's, that's roughly 40 minions that your computer has to handle. Throw in a pet or two, and that's quite a lot of stuff)

From reading the posts, I believe most of you are just experienceing some form of latency, or other bandwidth issues.
Having a high-speed connection does not neccessarily mean that you will be lag free. Lag is based more off of your upload speeds rather than your download speeds. Many ISPS (cable especially) limit your allotted upload bandwidth to that little better than a 56k connection. So, while you may be downloading at 300kbps, you may only be uploading at 20kbps. This causes the latency. The way most games work is by sending exchanging information with the server. You have to send info to the server to receive info.
Also, you have to consider the route your connection is taking to the server. You don't have a direct connection to the Guild Wars server. It probably passes through many different hosts on its way. For Example:

As you can see, the request passes through 17 different hosts before reaching the destination. That can slow down the process quite a bit, especially if one of those hosts is a bit slow. That can also have an effect on why you get high download speeds from one website, and low speeds from another.
Also, as Balmung reported, another program running in the background may be taking up bandwidth. If you have Windows Automatic updates on, it will run in the background and sap bandwidth right out from under you. Some other programs may also be doing this. Spyware and viruses could also cause the problem.
The last thing I can think of is simply a problem of over-crowded servers. When I first started playing Guild Wars (over a year ago), I experienced the same problems in Ascalon City. It was simply a matter of too many people for the server to handle. With the release of Factions, I have noticed the same thing happen. Even though I am on a much better connection now. So, it could very well be an influx of people that is slowing up everyone.
I doubt everyone here is experienceing exactly the same problem for exactly the same reason. So, I recommend you try a few things:
1. Clean up your computer. Run Disk cleanup, Disk Deframanetor, maybe even Check Disk or Scan Disk, Update your antivirus and perform a scan (You can get AVG for free), and update then scan with Spybot or Adaware. This may not help at all, but it should help you out in the long run by making your computer more efficient. It's kind of like getting your car serviced.
2. Check for any other programs that are using bandwidth. This could be things like an instant messenging program, your email program, downloads, a media player, internet radio, p2p / fileshareing programs, a newsreader, auto-update software, etc. If you have anything like that open, close it. Teamspeak can slow things quite a bit also.
3. In GuildWars, try reducing the visual quality. That could speed things up on a slower system.
4. In GuildWars, try switching to a district with less people.
Well, I hope some of this helps. If the problem lies within your connection speed, or just overcrowded servers there's not really a whole lot you can do.

As stated in other threads IT IS A PROBLEM WITH A THIER1 provider(a Verizon Company) which we all connect through to reach A-Net.
No matter what IP provider You use you still have to go through 1 or more of the Thier1 providers (only like 5 or 6 of them WORLD WIDE)

Will this make a difference to latency ? I have tried that in the past but still noticed no significant change. Can someone confirm this please.
Oh and I've followed all of the points in the other thread clean your comp[uter in this board. Only things I can think is :
- Anet
-Route through hubs to the GW's server
- My ISP and there network peak times
- Crowded server
- Someone hates me farming bosses and pvping =p

Everything here has been done on my computer... its GW itself... I do all those things on a regular basis so yeah...
However those are the same tips I give out to people looking to make things run smoother.
OH and I also have reallocated memory to make GW run smoother... so errm.. yeah *shrugs*

after windows update downloads stuff, you install and then he asks for a restart, before you restart, go to the control panel and disable windows auto updates.
then restart.
after that, my GW is working fin again.
but i have no way of knowing tis is what fixed it. it just appened to me

Im not sure, but maybe Windows Update maintains a low level constant connection. Itd barely be noticeable during regular web browding, but with a connection intensive activity like gaming, it makes a noticable difference.

My internet connection was fuctioning at peak speeds.
My frame rate was dropping from 60 frames to 12 frames and back. I changed the settings durring the game and no change.
I verified that no other app was taking CPU or ram.
So I was lagging for no reason. My computer is more then enough to handle the game and even at lower settings there was no change. This game is going down hill.

Do you have some kind of "Connection Quality Log"? Something that shows connection quality over time? It seems like youre spiking(sudden increases in travel time for information over Net connection, as I understand it), and a log would let you know if this was happening. Ive had a similar thing happen in another game, did a tracert while I was playing(no other net programs running), and saw quite a few increases in ping times. Heres a screen showing ping spikes

I hadn't heard that. That's probably the problem most people are experienceing, and why it is inconsistant. (remember the overcrowded servers i mentioned? /end shameless self-promoting pat on back) But, there's really nothing anyone can do but wait out for a Solution from Anet's end, or for people to quit playing.
Hey botters! Go play WoW or something! Free the servers!

i'm getting something similar... sort of. in a mission all of a sudden i can't move or use skills. Then i jump to the person and can use skill... sometimes... i still can't use the skills. It is annoying me bacause it just so happens that when i'm about 30 seconds away from finish a rather difficult mission.... i get logged out with an error message. This is really annoying me. Is this sort of what you are experiencing? I have comcast so that might be it but i doubt it since i have never had this problem until about... 3 days ago
