How to get IE >5.5 offline?
Alright...i'm setting up an older computer with Windows 98 for a cable network, but i cannot connect to the internet on it thru cable without Internet Explorer 5.5 or better, and all of the downloads i can find require you to connect to the internet for the files during the download....
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Win 98 comes with explorer and all the tools for connecting to the net... What are you asking to do? Obviously 98 is different then xp with the settings and the way it's set-up to connect. Also, you might want to go with 98se, it's far less buggy and doesn't have as many connection issues. Not sure how you would get ahold of a disk though, you *might* be able to find it at a used comp store, possibly?
What is it your trying to do exactly?

Why not use the PC you're on at the moment to download the version of IE that you require, then burn it to CD and install it on the Windows 98 computer?

First of all you will need to visit the Microsoft website and get the IE6 SP1 installer using this link: ie6setup.exe (479kb)
Create the following folder on your computer:
C:\Downloads
Now save this file to this location on your computer.
Next go to the Start Menu and select Run
A small window will appear. Type in the following including the quotation marks:
Code:
"C:\Downloads\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"
This will allow you to fully download IE6 to use on your PC. You can also save it to a USB flash drive, burn it to a CD or any other portable media device. Doing this will allow you to do a full install of Internet Explorer without an Internet connection.
------------
Since you're also using Windows 98SE you should also install the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack

You should be able to configure a win 98se machine to connect to the internet. If your saying you can't browse because the browser isn't supported and you want to get the setup downloader for either 5.5 or 6 to run on your machine go here and download the setup files and either copy them across your network or to a disk, then run them on the 98 machine...
IE 5.5 or here
IE6.1.
They are small set-up programs that will download and install either version for you. If you can't connect to the net at all, then you will need to run the connection wizard located in the control panels and input the proper info for your network setup.
Or what tarun ^^ said, i couldn't remember the switches and I'm on a MAC so i couldn't test out my memory.... I would suggest getting both, since ie 6.1 doesn't come with active desktop, thats if your used to that sort of thing...

Get Firefox instead (although it hogs the system more than IE).
