Default Crackling sounds still happening

Hi there,

Ever since the update that introduced the crackling sounds into GW for me, I haven't been able to shake the bug. Even after the update that said it fixed the problem, I still have Snap Crackle and Pop visiting me.

Is there anything I can do about this? (I've played with all possible in game settings and have even tried to tweak the global sound settings with no success)

Me too, but not as bad or as often as it was. I'm sure it's still being worked on. I remember when the sound engine got updated for Factions, it was a total nightmare. The Rice Krispies in milk we have now is trivial compared to the issues we had back then, trust me.

So for now, just get some marshmallows and make the most of it...

What is the setting you have your Sound on in the Guild Wars options screen?

I use to have this issue but I did the following:

- Updated my Sound Card driver to the latest version
- Moved the Sound Options slider to the centre. This is the ideal setting
- Disabled EAX sound (Don't really need it)

Remeber when you make any changes you make to the sound options, you need to restart Guild Wars for them to take effect.

Hope that helps, if not contact A.net support directly and tell them the make and model number of your sound card and hopefully they can sort it out soon.

I didn't know that you had to restart GW to apply sound settings. I will try that tonite and hopefully post with my results.

Ok, to come back with results.

Unfortunately, after restarting GW approximately 13 times with different settings and combinations of settings in place, I still get crackling. However, I did start paying attention to WHEN and WHERE is happens.. and although sketchy, it might provide the devs with some more insight into my problem.

Basically, I mainly get crackling during battles. It seems that it is more likely to happen if my 'camera' is close to my character. If I move the character out, and then rotate slightly, I can get the crackling sounds to go away. So it seems to be a side effect of the environmental sound engine (i.e. as sounds move around in 3D space as I move my camera, the crackle goes away).

Mind you, I wonder if any of the devs actually READ this form. Hope so

Same deal here, only get it in battle and if I move the camera it goes away. I always have my camera as far away as possible.

Changing audio settings has NOT helped, and every driver on my PC is now up-to-date.

If changing the sound settings and driver doesn't help, then its a underlying issue with the sound engine of Guild Wars, so really all that can be done is to send a support ticket to A.net and hopefully the will do further improvements soon.

Let me guess Some of you guys are using USB Headsets (Plantronics) I have had the same problem since they updated the sound Engine The only problem Is plantrionics Headsets use Generic Windows Drivers So they cannot be updated (if you can find any Please let Me Know)

Same here. Before update everything worked perfectly. After update, RoF is unplayable with EAX activated and I'm also getting the snap, crackle and pop issue at random intervals.

For the record I'm not using a headset, but pumping the PC's sound through an expensive audio/video set-up via digital cabling which culminates in a decent KeF Q series speaker set-up. I know it's not the speakers at my end causing this problem.

Yea I am getting the same problem. It seems only to happen during battle to me too, though I haven't tried doing anything with my camera. I noticed that it totally random for me too.
To test I went outside and played until I heard the crackiling sound. I zone to town and then went back to the same group of enemies that caused it the first time and it didn't happen again.

I wonder if this is related to issues with Creative Lab Cards and motherboard chipset(s).

Another odd question they may be related, are you running a Pentium 4 w/ hyper threading or a multi-core cpu?

If you are using an X-fi and have crackling issues, may want to consider this beta driver.. it may help:

This download

* Includes Creative Audio Console, which enables you to use the Sound Blaster X-Fi features and functions.
* Does not address all the reported general "crackling" issues, but it does resolve some specific issues with crackling. Investigations with some motherboard manufacturers are ongoing, and we hope to provide a general solution soon.
* Resolves some issues to improve your overall audio experience.

I remember running into this issue after turning on EAX sound. Once I turned it off, the crackling sounds went away. I'm running a Creative Labs Audigy2 inside my Dell XPS M1710 laptop. CPU is a 2.0ghz CoreDuo.

I think I actually came across "crackling" when I visited one of our alliance's members guild hall (the lux faction one). I do know that creative sneaks in other drivers besides the x-fi if you extract all the files that find the wdm folder then run the driver setup up manually.. I will give this a try that and it's suppose to fix issues with Quake 4 which I just picked up recently too.

add my name to the list.....I still have the crackling, and it got worse after the update....it happens on the login screen as well. No platronic stuff here, no eax.....I feel I should grab some marshmallows and sing campfire songs...sounds like a wet log on a fire to me...and this wasnt there before the updates....but if this is the worst that can go wrong, I will keep it.
