Lac development on the decoding side. But then again you can always spread the sound over the speakers. Two lefts and two rights.

I would check the settings on your sound card and speakers. I play it on a 5.1 system myself, and it comes out of all the speakers.
The way 5.1 works is that if the source does not provide a 5.1 signal, it simply copies the 2 or 2.1 to the other speakers. This is the same if you put a mono record on a stereo record player, or play a stereo DVD on a home unit with surround sound.
I would probably check the sound card settings first. And also check the audio settings in GW itself. When I get home tonight, I will see if I can duplicate this problem in my home system.

Check your settings.
GW works with 5.1.
In GW Options, Set for 3D Hardware Acceleration. (SET EAX if you have a good Creative card)
IN WINDOWS, you have to make sure that your speakers are set to 5.1 in the Sound Options.
I have a 5.1 system and an Audigy 2. Surround Sound works perfectly.

Same here, i only have a 2.1 set in right now though. In Yaks, if i stay away from the Fire, i hear it roaring like a fire would, then i move closer, that sound goes completely away and all i hear is the cracking from the fire.

AC'97 is a built in chip.
Onboard sound taxes the system far more than a PCI card like a Sound Blaster.
Have you tried updating your drivers from your board manufacturer's site?
