Guild Wars...portable?
Trying a little experiment with Guild Wars to see if I can make the client portable. I've looked around and saw this portable client you can download from this website. Apparently it's "third party" and against the eula and you need at least a 2gb flash drive. I, unfortunatly don't have one so I looked for another alternative. I might of found just what I was looking for. AOL offers a program to it's members called "Xdrive." The basic Xdrive has 5gb of space *Enough to play Guild Wars* So, I decided to test it out...*Xdrive is an online hard drive, a lot like a computer without all the other components, it's freeware but you need to sign up for AOL email which is free.* Right now i'm copying my Guild Wars file to the Xdrive to see if I can run it from there. If it works Xdrive has their own "Desktop Client" that lets you access your Xdrive without having to go to their website and log in. If I can get it to work I might be able to install Xdrive on my 256mb flash drive and create a portable Guild Wars client!

Wow, nice.
And the portable client on the site might be third party, but I believe anet doesnt want third party programs used for the game (bots) so that you wont be tricked into downloading a keylogger and get your account hacked/stolen. Correct me if I'm wrong

Another reason I'm not downloading the portable client. What I'm doing is i'm copying my files and putting them onto the drive, not downloading them from a third party. I'm really hoping this works.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure Guru does plenty of virus scans on files submitted to them on the site. It is an Elite Fansite, ya know. They surely wouldn't put items on the site that is against the EULA.

Bad bad bad. good choice, not downloading.
As for the online harddrive.....i think it would be really slow, especially loading into new areas.

LOL! You're gonna try to play Guild Wars with both the usual network connection to the PlayNC server and while streaming every single texture, model, bitmap, sound effect and who knows what else from another website?
Hint: Follow these steps to make it work:
1) Get yourself an old drainpipe.
2) Go to your local electronics store and buy 50 optical fiber cables long enough for each of them to extend from your home to your service provider.
3) Bind them together and stick them in your drainpipe.
4) Walk to your service provider, dropping your personal network connection as you go.
And be quick cause I heard optical fiber is discounted this week, only $299,- per meter now if I'm not mistaken.
On the other hand, if you try it without following these steps you can still comfort yourself with the entry in the Guinness Book of Record: "Lowest frame rate ever measured since the release of MS-DOS 6.0".

Actually, I've done this for a good year or so, I have GW running off an Ipod 40Gb (as a secondary hard drive...), basically, install to the portable drive (it currently needs to be at least a 4Gb drive to fit) and just plug that drive into a computer and double click the GW.exe to run it
it works fine

Yeah and USB would work just fine too, but not a webstream.

I have seen several problems associate with loading Guild Wars onto USB devices and realy can't recommend that alternative at all. Firewire although it has better banwidth still can cause problems (that I tried and realy had some issues with connections going down quite ofen). As far as portability, the only way to do that is to get a laptop that can run GW. Any other means are not guaranteed to work. Seeing as how the only info on your hard drive is maps and the connection client I see no problem with just installing it onto each and every computer that you use to play on (might be a problem if you use internet cafe's as they have some wierd policies on installing software).
