My ping is pretty unstable but I run my internet connection through a router.

When I disconnect cable from router and plug straight into PC modem, it says there is no connection which I dont particularly understand.

I'm on NTL Broadband - does anyone know why it doesn't recognise a connection when I go direct.

Since NTL broadband is not a dial-up connection, its normal the your PC's integrated modem doesnt work. You need an external modem that converts the signal so its usable by your computer. So my first question is by router, you mean external modem (either uses USB cable or network cable to 1 PC), external modem to which you can connect multiple computers or a plain router like a D-Link router?

I have a DSL connection, my modem is linked to a router and the router is connected to 2 or 3 comps depending if laptop is connected or not, and ping isnt less stable, its just slightly longer.

NTL now provide an external modem which connects to my router then i have two PC's running off the router.

If i want to skip the router and plug my PC cable straight into external modem it does not recognise the connection?

If you have an install disc that came with your modem, use it to update or repair the install, this happened to me, my laptop doesn't detect the modem on its own if i bypass the router but it does recognize the router. Else its probably the auto-detect that doesn't work with your modem, i never had this problem so i cant help you with that at the moment.

You dont need an install disc, if you direct connect the cat5e straight from your modem to the PC it will/should pick up the connection straight away, plugging it into a router will make no difference at all.

If you cant get it to connect at all, contact NTL, although their support is crap, they may help.

We need some more information here, what operations do you perform when you unplug from your router and into your modem. What kind of connection is this ? does your service limit the number of assigned IP address ?

You may need to release and renew an ip address using some windows cml tools to obtain an ip from the modem if your system is up when you perform this change.

If your isp allows only ip per modem, your router's Mac address might be tied to the DHCP system employed by your service. You will need to unplug your modem for 5 minutes before reconnecting to un-cache this information.

What kind of services are running on both machines, are they both protected and spyware/malware free ? Do you run any torrents or P2P software on either machine that might leech bandwidth and cause unstable pings ?
