I have the same problem.
I am using the -dsound switch, which fixed the sound in general back to audibly identifiable from the random grunts and pops that the new sound system produced, but there is an incredibly annoying "hiss", like tv static, that plays during area transitions. It's really only a problem for me because it's at least 3 or 4 times louder than the normal game audio. It's jarring.
