Default DSL Disconnection Issues

I've been having strange DSL Disconnection issues for a while now. When playing GW, if anyone calls our house, we lose our GW connection. It appears to do the same thing when just surfing the net, but it's less noticable. I have filters for the phone lines, but aren't using one for the DSL. I'm using a Westel327W Modem/Route, have Window XP and Verizon DSL. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this issue before I start spending hours on the phone with Verizon? Thanks.

I had the exact same problem a while back with BT. Turned out it was the old phone line we were on.

You said you have filters for the phone line, but not for the DSL cable. Where exactly are you plugging the DSL cable in then?

Try updating your firmware/drivers

http://www.fastaccess.drivers.bellsouth.net/

then reset your modem.

I forgot to add: Whenever someone called, the phone would sound really crackly or cut out altogether. Unless that's happening, it's likely not a problem from outside.

Not having a filter on your DSL will cause the connection to drop if anyone phones you on the that line. Sticking a filter on that connection will sort the problem out in 99% of cases.

That's what i first thought. But he said he's been having them for "a while". Does that mean ever since he got broadband or the last few weeks/months?

When did this problem start? and before it did, was the DSL cable plugged into the filter then?

We have a think called a "splitter" ( probably the same as your "filter" ).

We have one phone in the bedroom without the splitter, if you pick it up, it will disconnect you from internet...my parents abuse it once in a while to get me off the i-net...but then I tell them it will crash my pc and it might break...they're not really compu savvy.

So my guess: splitter/filter?

Yes, it's the same, and proberbly what trf2374's problem is.

Although, he also said it stopped working "a while ago". If he wasn't using the filter for it before then, i'd like to know how it worked beforehand.

The filter is for phone lines only -- Verizon has said that you're not supposed to have one from your modem to your wall connection. So, our phones in our bedroom and dining room have a filter on them, it's a small box with a phone cord that the normal phone cord connects into. The phone cord our DSL modem uses does not have a filter because we were told that's bad and aren't supposed to have one.

If by splitter you mean a little box-thingy that turns one phone line into two, then no, we are not using one.

We had this problem alot when we first got DSL ~3 years ago, but after several months, it appeared to go away. We got a spead upgrade last week, and the problem has returned. We don't even have to pick up the phone, if someone calls our house or if one of us tries to call using the land line, we lose our connection.

Verizon has told us we are somewhat far from their signal. Our phone itself doesn't give the best reception, there are clicks and white noise on it when we use it, but it's not particularily loud, more of an annoyance.

I downloaded these, logged into my modem and tried to get it to use them to update, but it wouldn't take them.

why don't you just try the filter first? It's not gonna break anything, just plug it in the main line, then the phone on one end and DSL on the other. And see what happen.

Into the wall jack.

We have 3 wall jacks in our house. 2 are used by phones and have filters on them. 1 is used by the DSL.

Filters are not to be used for the DSL line.

I found out yesterday that simply turning the phone on will kill my connection.

If it is true DSL, it will require splitters/filters. If it's going into it's own socket, it still needs the filter between the DSL cable and phone socket.

Empty sockets in your house will also require a filter, even if no cable/phone plugs into it.

Call your service provider and get them to fix it, if they can't ditch them. Unless it's something like filters then we can't help. Honestly, if you have a bad REGULAR connection signal while talking on the phone your provider SUCKS and you need to get rid of them, nor will you ever be able to have a good internet connection.
