I have the same issue. Thought it was just my computer. Game plays well after the repair but always wondered why it had to repair itself. Anyone?

Because the data currently no longer matches what it has archived or backed up, so it's attempting to restore itself from backup.

But what I don't understand is, the fact that some people I talk to say they have never had this problem. Surely that means there is something different about my computer or something right?

Other than maybe your installation of guild wars, not really. It could be that they aren't using system restore and have it turned off.

Usually that message means some corruption has been detected in your Gw.dat file and it is attempting to fix itself. It works most of the time, but sometimes it won't fix it and you'll end up with white cubes instead of characters, jumping NPCs and problems like that.

when you say jumping npcs would you describe it as NPC's running back and forth repeatitly? Cause I've had that problem for 3 days now, and my chara won't do emotes when I tell him to. Like if i do /sit The camera lowers and he stays standing. then a couple seconds later he does the /boo movements. but it's affecting like 10 -15 emotes.

I also received the "Repairing Data Archieve" window a few days ago and am now having to re download every town and area again.
I'm really hoping those areas are now NOT taking up twice the space..and the "re-downloading" is either over writing these areas or they were completely removed with the repair, otherwise it will be taking up twice my disk space, and thats not groovy..no sir,I don't like it.
Also I have no clue after 2 years ,why now it would do this,as it's never happened before as far as I remember.

You can always try re-installing, or even de-fragging your computer in some cases...

I ususally make some ramen and get a drink in the meantime. It's not like I'm gonna log on and loose my cache of stuff if I'm not there.

I have the same problem as the Vixen and Mean,
really sucks for me as i don't have the install CD's with me, and can't get hold of them for a while. basically means i will have to load every area OR Put -image in my shortcut to d/l the files, but that would take a very very long time!
Plus it still says 2gb for my .dat file........really annoying
Please help us poor poor people

If you have the repairing data archive message and you still have problems, then i'm afraid that your only option is to delete the Gw.dat file and reinstall. The best way is to use -image (preferably during the night) to download everything again.
Other than that, making a backup of a working Gw.dat file by either using an external HDD or burning it on a DVD can help reduce the time it takes for a full reinstall.
