Well i have been into gaming for way too long ( insert here C64 ) and one thing sure happened to me that was weird with GW.
Game was freezing as soon I was loging to the game...not even into but only poping the exe then first thing i know it was freezing the login screen.
It was my HD. All was fine...as long i didnt had to run gw.
Try to swpa HDs or to install and try on anther seperate HD, not partition.

Sound like an overheating issue or your gw.dat could be corrupted. Then again it could be one of your drivers. My GW still run fine never crash unless it's 007. Check your cooling first then drivers, just check all the little things first. If all else fail, you might need to back up your gw.dat file, then download/reinstall gw.

I defragmented my hard drive and it need it a little bit, also, my computer is just over a year old so I really do hope that my hard drive would be crapping out on me already (good thing I extended the warranty). I have a Dell XPS with the cooling fan in the front and it rarely puts out any heat. My drivers may be out of date, was having trouble with Halo before I bought GW and the Dell guy on the phone had me update them, but I had to reformat my hard drive because of a virus, so maybe I will try that.

Actually, this seems to be a rather common problem - it happens to me (too) often and some of my Guildies on occasion, and I've seen reference to it in various forums. It would seem to be some obscure interaction between GW and the OS/drivers.
In my case it gets even weirder. I normally have my Windows XP set to the "Windows Standard" theme (so it looks like Windows 98/2k - I just like that better). I also have a custom start-up sound. When the lock-up happens, I can still talk on Ventrilo, but I can't get out of the (frozen) game, so I have to hit Reset to restart the computer. Usually, after the restart, the desktop has reverted to the standard WinXP theme, and sometimes the start-up sound reverts to the default sound, sometimes it's my custom sound, and sometimes it's the "thunder" that was installed when I upgraded to a Sound Blaster Audigy a few months ago. I dunno, maybe it's doing some sort of auto-Restore, but it's doubly annoying.

Me too
My wife and I both get random freezes now - both of our systems were rock-solid before the update, although I could not state with 100% conviction that it might be the GW update and not an XP update.... One is a twin-cpu Intel system (HP XW6200), and one an AMD 64 X2 system. Both have Nvidia gfx cards, a 6800GT and a 7950GT
I can normally issue the three-fingered salute to get the task manager up, and end the GW.EXE process. Interestingly enough, it has just over 500MB allocated (2GB physical memory on each system) and is using precisely zero cpu time. If the "Send Error Report" box is displayed (rarely), I am unable to do anything with it.
Peculiar to my wife's system is an occasional crash where the GUI will completely disappear, yet the process can still be seen running... All I can say is thank heavens for the ability to reconnect, but it is getting kinda frustrating. And no, we don't have any problems with any other games or applications.

Since it seems I'm not the only one having this problem maybe I should make another post in the bugs forum to see if a response from ANET might come about.

No. Its a tech issue. Might want to try creating a support ticket and see if you can get past their automated responses, tho.
