You will probably have to buy a new fan. The fan is there for cooling reasons, lowering the fan speed could lead to overheating.

If you still have a warranty(on said piece[s] of equip), for now, I'd slide the tower a little further away.

if not, zalman makes some nice after market fans/water cooling systems.

Turn off the computer, open the case, and use some q-tips and rubbing alcohol to clean the fan. Make sure there are no wires that could be touching or grazing the fan - that can cause noise too.

If these arent the problems and you cant fix this, I would suggest buying an Artic Cooling heatsink. They have good LGA 775 heatsinks for cheap. Zalman is beter but much more expensive.

There's loads of fans for the LGA775 socket. If you're talking about the stock ones that come with the Core 2 Duos, then those are quiet in my opinion.

However, if you have an older Intel core such as a Pentium 4 or Celeron on the LGA775, then yes, those are naturally noisy due to the amount of heat that they put out.

This works everytime at making noisy fans quiet.

Just kidding fans are cheap, and easy to replace.

I use the AMD equivlant of this :-

Clink for the fan

Can't argue with the performance, my CPU never gets above 35C on a full load and that's when overclocked too.

Zalman has some nice CPU coolers that are not noisy at all. Be sure to check for compatibility with your motherboard first tho.

I love my Zallman. It's nearly silent (and I can't hear it over ambient room noise). However, it's damn heavy because it's solid copper. So be sure that you have good strong mechanical mounting if you go with Zallman Cu. Otherwise find a good Aluminum heatsink and fan combo.
