How does this comp look?
http://www.pcoption.co.uk/pcbaseunit..._4850p4con.htm
for gaming and the likes that is. Keep in mind I can upgrade or addon some stuff at the bottom.
Looking into getting a cheapish (under £600 if possible) gaming comp because this one is overheating waaay too much. I am trying one more thing to fix it today but if that doesn't work, I will buy a new comp (ie perhaps the one above that I linked to)

What is your current system? Is it the GPU that is overheating? If you would try to give a detailed description, then perhaps someone could help you figure out how to get it running cooler.... just a thought to save you some cash. Of course a new PC is always nice . XD

A new PC is always nice XD
in any case, it just loves to overheat in most games (morrowind, with or without mods, TF2, GW, any game that is remotely graphical)
I have done almost everything to cool it down except for putting the tower on top of my desk, the fans are working, the PSU is okay, but it still loves to overheat.
I have another topic somewhere here if you want to check it out *just go into find all posts or all topics by me bit*
it's even BSOD'd on me along with random shut downs.

Computer looks good. Being from Canada I have no clue if the UK price is good but it seems like it is. The video card gets good reviews, better than an 8600GT. Really nice power supply, for upgrades. The only potential bad thing I see is the memory.
I played with the upgrades for ya, and came up with what I would do. I upgraded the Cpu, Hard drive and Memory. I doubt there is a game out there you could not play on High settings with this.
This is the link after you add upgrades.
http://www.romancart.com/cart.asp
You will probably want to get a new mouse and keyboard, but that's easy.
I would just say don;t buy the 1st machine you see, shop around. For gaming look at Cpu, Ram, and video card. Also I will add (may get screamed at for this) If you use the computer for more than just gaming. Hp make great computers with tons of ram and fully loaded. The only thing you would have to do is upgrade the Graphics card and maybe power supply. Here is a link I found
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en...6-3733085.html
This one more expensive, but prob no need to upgrade video card or power.

These websites may help also.

Hope that helps

if you go with that system that you posted add the following:
4 GB ram (OCZ 4GB DDR2 800 would be my choice)
Quad Core 6600 (it's the future and that particular CPU will overclock to 3ghz too - trust me it's more than worth it... multi-tasking like you never thoguht of before)
If you have money left then get a Crossfire compatible motherboard (for the future of course)
that should be a nice system - grab it and then go romp through Crysis with the eye candy on

The only major thing I can see with that system is the 1 gig of RAM. You'd want at least 2gig and DDR2 800 would be better than 667 (and may be cheaper).
The hard drive is a bit small by today's standards, and you may want a bigger one, but it won't affect the performance.

Upgrade to 2 Gigs of ram. 1 gig is just not enough.

well at least i am not the only one who thought that 1GB is not enough RAM
I'll experiment with costs/upgrades since I am on a budget (which is why I will probably stay with the standard case to avoid going over my budget too much >_< )
EDIT: Well I did a bit of checking and this is probably the most I could spend roughly
and incase you can't the image, here are the specs I chose
Gamers Base Unit. ATi 4850. Intel® Core® 2 Duo. (Q6600 (2.4GHz, 6MB, 1066FSB) , Coolermaster Elite Case 650 Watt PSU , No Power Supply Upgrade , Xp Home With SP2 & Disc , 1 - 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E Graphics Card, Asus P5KPL-C/1600 Motherboard , 500GB Sata 2 Hard Drive , TWIN2X2048-6400C4 4GB ) And
Creative X-FI Xtreme Audio 7.1 Soundcard
£629.22
reason for XP home with SP2 and disc is because I have no idea if the XP disk I have here will work (because its been used to activate my current comp via the web although if I am wrong and dont need to buy a new copy, let me know)
btw I considered Vista but 1) it might be a bit much for me to buy (I could always get it down the line) and 2) XP has less troubles with games XD

looks nice - very nice indeed I have a similar setup and it screams through everything I've thrown at it.
I don't know about Scotland, but in the USA you can call Microsoft and transfer the XP license from your old system to your new one. IMO, you do not need to buy a new cd if you already have an original XP install disc at home. You're right about Vista... there are very few games out there that would actually benefit from it (DirectX10 is the only reason)... wait for SP2.
It's your choice but I strongly suggest you take the money saved on the extra XP disc and drop the sound card as well. Now go and pick the Asus P5E motherboard (it's the first of the ATI Crossfire Chipset ones). By doing that you will be spending about 5 quid more and getting 2x the upgrade possibilities with the better motherboard. When building your new pc you want to think for the future. The P5E gives you Crossfire capability and just as importantly it has 4 dual channel slots for your memory instead of just 2.... you will want that sometime down the road, I gurantee it. It's got onboard HD sound too, so don't worry about a sound card. That will give you lots more bang for your buck. XD

The E8400 slaughters the Q6600 in performance on almost every single front (and can overclock far far better). If you want the PC now, go dual core. If you can wait, wait for Nehalem if you are going quad core.

Agreed!! Drop the sound card, and save the money. The on board 7.1 will be just fine. Also you will have no problems using your Xp disk on your new computer, Unless you have reformatted your old one like 50 times . Even then will be fine with one phone call.
Great choice on Corsair memory!
With the 80 pounds savings spend on a 24 of beer to adequately toast the beast of a comp you will have
1 thing to save even more, and others maybe could put there 2 cents in. Honestly I think going Quad core is not needed at all. In my opinion there is absolutely no need now or in the near future for quad. Unless you run 3 copies of photo shop while playing games. I would get the dual core 3.0 upgrade, my guess is that would be more that you and 99% of everyone else will need for the next 4 years. Also the difference between 2.6 and 3 is huge.
Great comp though, Enjoy
