hey guys, im thinking about building a new gaming desktop, i was thinking about using the mainstream computer build from the stickied guide along with vista home premium 64 bit SP1 OEM edition and a 17" monitor now i know its fairly small but i really cant afford anything bigger or fancier. dont really know much about building computers so i dont even know if it can even be connected properly. the price has to be at most 1100 dollars im probably gonna use newegg or something like that.
if you guys could think of a better build please post it but remember with taxes and shipping has to be at most $1100.

ok so a few questions, can SP1 recognize 4 gigs of ram?
will that monitor fit?
anywhere to cut coreners and reduce the price for about the same performance.
thats it i think any help would be nice, thanks guys. oh and i have like the mouse and keyboard but if you guys come up with a cheaper build then i could get a good gaming keyboard with this.

vista x64 can recognize 4gb RAM and more. vista x86 cannot recognize more than 4gb (usually around 3.2 to 3.5) no matter how much you patch it.

your monitor and graphic card is a huge mismatch. you're better off downgrading your graphic card to a radeon hd4850 or geforce gts250, and using that money to upgrade to a 22" monitor at 1680x1050 resolution. trust me, the gtx260 is meant to game on 24" monitors, and is totally overkill on a 17".

your mobo is also too expensive. if you want to go with the intel route (your processor is fine), consider the P45/35 chipsets. that will reduce cost some more with no/very little loss in performance. if you want to go with the AMD route, you can pick up a phenom II x3 720 CPU and a 790GX chipset mobo for roughly the same amount as the intel build. both should give you comparable performance, though the AMD is better for multithreaded apps because of the 3rd core.

you can also downgrade your PSU to a 500W. trust me, your system will run fine on it, especially if you follow my graphic card/monitor suggestion.

what would you recommend the Intel route with this mobo and that processor or the phenom and 790GX route, the comp will be mostly for gaming.

i'd go with a slightly better monitor, but if that one works for you, then great. i have no experience with that brand.

try a P45 board from asus, since those generallly work pretty well. in fact, since you're using only one graphic card, something like the P43 chipset would work perfectly also.

honestly i have no strong opinion about the AMD build. for a gaming build, both would be good.

What games will you be playing? That's a big factor in deciding what video card to get, and if you don't intend to play Crysis at 200 FPS than you could save allot of money there too. Still, I'd get a 260 or equivalent vs a 250 if it were me and I was buying new right now... not a big price jump there and really the 250 is not a high end gaming card right now.

Get a Phenom II Quad COre (Deneb) and a AMD mobo with just a single PCI Express Slot. Spend the $$$ you saved on that mobo to get one really good video card (the best you can afford) since SLI/Crossfire is way overrated - you need a 24" monitor to make it worth getting SLI in most cases.... for a small monitor it's a waste to do SLI... and get a 19" with 1400x900 resolution.. that is adequate for gaming imo. XD

well i hope to play the newest games now and games in the future up to atleast 2-3 years, it doesnt have to be ultra high at like 100+ FPS, it has to be you know medium-high and like playable FPS like say 60-70. i was eyeing that phenom chip a while ago idk i might use that with a cheap motherboard, i dont know if ill be able to get a cheaper motherboard because the P43 moriz mentioned cost like $90 dunno if i can get a better motherboard for cheaper.

Being able to play the latest-and-greatest for 2-3 years is a unrealistic goal; three years is an eternity in this industry. But again, it depends on what kinds of games you'll be playing. Games like WoW, SC2/D3, etc. are specifically targeted to mid-tier systems, whereas shooters tend to push systems much harder.

For motherboard I'd go with one of the Gigabyte UD3 (the oft-recommended: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128358) or Asus P5Q boards; an ASRock P45 board is a good budget choice.

allright well since i dont want to limit anyone who wants to respond to this thread how about this i have about $1000 with shipping and handling and

taxes included , i need a monitor and an OS plus the obvious things like RAM and Processor etc, what would you do to get the most gaming our of the money this computer will

be used for gaming like FarCry 2, Crysis, CoD 4-5 etc, it doesnt have to be max settings with tons of FPS medium high with playable FPS is all i want. i dont need anything like

mouse and keyboard, i do have an IDE DvD drive but idk if its good enough to use with newer motherboards.

for crysis and other shooters i would go with an ati HD4870 or an GTX260.
maybe get an quad core, guild wars does not support it but other games do.
i got an quad core PC with HD4870 for 1000 euro's.
and you can make the same pc for 850 euro's so 1000 dollars should be ok
you can grab kingston vlaue ram btw, cheaper and difference is very small

well i might be able bump up that monitor to a 22" for only like 40 dollars extra, it will be an acer monitor dunno much about acer though, it does have a good rating on newegg.

Most people don't have a bloody clue about monitors. That said, at your budget you're not going to be able to get anything decent, so just grab as much screen real estate as you can afford.

well, that is true, but for the price difference I would still get that card... of course I know what it's like to be on a budget too.

Perhaps consider this card - should be more than adequate at those lower resolutions (1400x900 or lower on a 19" I'm assuming)... the IceQ cards are pretty sweet in my exp. (got that one there myself and I love it). Crysis runs about 50 FPS on high settings and 1680x1050 res. for me with that card. Good enough I'd think..esp. for a budget.

well thanks anyway elder but i already bought that card :P, well i also bought a 22" monitor so at least it wont be total overkill. and perhaps in the future once i get some more money ill be able to upgrade the monitor, though at 22" i dont know if its worth going to a 24".

oh and one last question my power supply is only 500w thermaltake, but on my GFX card requirements it says 630W minimum, but for the same card different manufacturer the minimum is 500W, and same cards same manufacturer but different website still same card only 500W requirement. so i was wondering if i can run this card with my 500w, i wont be over clocking much just barely. oh and i will be playing in 1680x1050 no higher than that.
