CPU Cooler, DDR3, HDD, Sound Card, Etc ?s
Hi hi.
I'm thinking about this Cooler Master V8 cooler for my CPUs. I'm aiming for 4GHz on an E7200 and 4GHz on an i7 920. How would the V8 do for those overclocks? And would it be a good deal for $53?

As for DDR3 memory, is this set of Corsair modules ideal for $80? What are these capable of OCing to with an i7?

I'm also planning on a new hard drive. Right now, I have a 500GB 7200RPM 16MB cache. Should I put the OS and apps on the new one with 1TB 7200RPM and 32MB cache? I also see that Raptors are 10000RPM but only 16MB cache, so are those worth considering if I don't get an SSD?
Finally, how does a Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatality Pro for $100 sound? I know it says $139.99 but I'm planning on purchasing it at a Fry's retail store where it's $100.

Thanks! 8)
P.S.
I used a VGA extension cable, but then it won't detect my graphics card anymore when I use it. It won't let me run in native 1680x1050 either... Why is that? I'm using a DVI to VGA adapter on my Radeon HD 4850 and a VGA extension cable on top of that to connect to my monitor.

Most motherboards (I would guess 100% of x58) have built on sound cards. Unless you have a very serious need for it, I wouldnt recommend buying a separate one, especially one that will use up a pci-e slot.
As for coolers, I really like this one, although I have not tried overclocking. Idle, the i7 920 sits at about 25c

As for harddrives, I would recommend putting your programs/os on a single disk/partition, and use another for the bulk items.

I have a 4850 as well, and when I first open Catalyst COntrol Center it will not allow me to run in native res. either, I went into the XP Display Properties and set the resolution there... now CCC works great - may not be your problem but it could be.
Also, the SSD's are coming down allot in price, depending on your budget that might be a viable option for you. As Wrath stated - most quality mobos out there offer onboard Hi-Def sound, so I'd not spend $100 on a sound card myself.

Just cause Mobo's offer it integrated doesn't means it's actually good. I'd take the x-fi, and the superior sound quality(and specs) of a sound card in general, long before onboard. And i don't really see the big deal about the slot. How many people do you know who have all their pcie x1 slots full? I don't know any.

choosing sound cards is like matching graphic cards with monitors. just like you wouldn't want a GTX295 driving a 19" LCD, the same can be said for sound cards and speakers. in other words, unless you have $100+ quality speakers/headsets, getting a high end sound card like the x-fi is a waste of money.
not to mention, onboard sound has gone a long way, and should easily provide satisfactory audio on most 2.1 setups.

About the VGA cable - I suspect that your extension cable does not have all the wires required by newer plug&play monitors to read the P&P data off the monitor. You may need to get a newer cable that's p&p compatable.

For a 4GHz overclock on an i920, you might need to think about a non-air solution. The V8, while designed to be the best solution available for pure air, is still limited by the very method it uses to remove energy; air.
I would look at TEC (Thermal Electric) solutions. CoolIT makes quite a few all inclusive solutions (I use one myself), and Coolermaster makes the V10 for that purpose.
V10 can be found here:

You can find the CoolIT Freezone Elite here:

The overclocks you want to attempt are not low grade, which means you require a much higher grade cooler than other people to make it function correctly.
