what the above guy said.....

i've been playing games online for years now, had this computer almost the whole time, i've put new stuff into it over the years and i know it's getting old, but it had been able to run fine and have no problems with: EQ, Planetside, SWG, Lineage 2 (another ncsoft game), EQ2, WoW, and countless other non-mmo games.

that being said, within a week of installing and running guild wars, my computer started to restart randomly, and got to the point where it wouldnt boot up anymore, i replaced the powersupply, got a new heatsink/fan for the cpu, and got another fan for the case......formatted the harddrive, reinstalled windows, and it ran perfectly fine......until i installed guild wars again.

it isnt a game error or problem that restarts it, because it will restart on its own just in windows, or playing other games also, with guild wars not even open

it has something to do with something guild wars modifies is the only thing i can figure out, and i really wish they would fix figure out what it is and fix it

hmm, trust me, its most likely a overheating problem, try underclocking ur cpu, ive had all most of the errors posted, and this was the only solution that worked, ive played other games like cs n all, and no problems wat so eva, but guildwars puts alot of pressure on ur cpu (even tho it may not seem like it), and the reason for random crashes is that the system gets a bit 2 hot and restarts so ur that ur system isnt in any danger of overheating a bit 2 far, try running guildwars and check ur temps on ur cpu (and vid card i suppose), if it slowly increases, it is bound 2 reach a certain point, and at this point, if ur cpu is at normal speeds, guildwars shud run fine, if not (meaning overclocked) it will overheat.

example

normal cpu running at 30C, turn on guildwars, cpu reaches 50C (taking this is normal temp)
overclocked cpu running at 40C, turn on guildwars, cpu reaches 60C (motherboard detects possible overheat)

now wen the overheat occurs, the system will do 1 of the following

close guildwars wif a random error, memory, dxdiag, etc (overheating starting)
guildwars has choppy sound then freeze then restart (overheating)
guildwars then blue screen of death (really overheating)

after the BSOD has appeared, u shud find that guildwars doesnt run for very long if u run it right after u restart, this is becoz the system is still trying 2 cool down and running guildwars wud overheat it again, and if an error occurs, u shud find that they will happen more and more often until a freeze and a restart.

i have no idea how guildwars can overheat the cpu that badly, wen running even more detailed and graphical games run perfectly normal, i am still puzzled, but, since i have it fixed, i aint complaining, im jus trying 2 help pplz that had the same problem that i had, giving out suggestions, its ur choice 2 try or not

Underclocking your CPU can make things worse.
Underclocking your CPU's FSB can also downclock the RAM and AGI/PCI bus.
If any of those values is changed to something which doesn't properly synchronize with the CPU, you're going to have even more crashing problems.

Also, unless you can lock the AGP bus in the BIOS, you won't be able to underclock properly either.

Besides, if someone doesn't know what overclocking is, chances are they haven't done it, and most of us here have tried underclocking already.

This problem is very very sporadic.
I played for over 6 hours yesterday with no crashes, then today I crash like 2 hours in.
It's not a heat issue, I had speedfan open and my temp' was around 50 something degrees when I crashed (The reboot point is over 70 usually).

Before the May 26th update, I suffered from the textless BSOD reboots, but only sparsely. After the update, I couldn't play for 30 minutes without it happening... after much testing, I concluded it wasn't my overclock causing the problem.

In the end, I managed to solve the problem by updating the sound drivers for my Abit NF7-S nForce2 SoundStorm audio to the new 4.62 WHQL drivers (was using 4.60 WHQL before).

Might be worth a shot if anybody else has the same problem and harware as me.

well, thats video driver problem, not heat, if u get a blue screen and no writing, its heat, if u get writing, its a driver problem

Just wanted to add myself to the list of people affected by the random reboot issue. Sometimes I can play for hours, sometimes i reboot in 10 minutes. I can play half-life 2 for ever without issues. My specs are as follows
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe(rev 1.01)
Athlon xp 3200+ @ 11.5 x 200 = 2300mhz(only overlocked .5 on the multiplier from 11)
2 sticks of 512mb DDR333 kingston value ram(stock timings)
Geforce MX440 SE(agp)(128mb)
450W PS
My CPU temp never goes above 52C when im playing GW. I know 52 is a little hot but not hot enough to cause hard reboots.
motherboard and video card have most the most up to date drivers/bios version.

I don't know if it has been mentioned here already, but many people may have an unstable PC without knowing it. Those who overclock their systems usualy (or atleast should) test to make sure it's stable, but other people may have too due to overheating, bad PSU, low voltages and so on. And most people won't notice it besides occasionally crashes every now and again.

I suggest you use a program like Prime95 (freeware) which puts your PC to a stress test, to check that it does the calculations correctly under extremly high load.

I had problems with GW crashing, restarting my PC and so on .. and sure enough it didn't pass a stress test either. After checking that it shouldn't be a case of overheating, I raised the voltage to my memory and CPU and now GW runs just fine.

During the Beta-Weekend event, my GW never crashed once. Ever. I ran everything on max at 1024x768 and it ran as smooth as silk. When the game came to official release, I got the same problem you guys are getting. Around 15 minutes to even and hour and a half of playing, and then I get "the black screen of death". I did everything, uninstall/reinstall of GW to completly formatting my computer. Still the same problem. I am 100% positive it is the game, not my computer. I have run HL2, no problems. Doom 3, no problems. Far Cry, no problems. This is the only game that does not like my computer. I beg for a soultion.

*EDIT* I upgraded my DirectX to 9.0c in hopes that it would fix GW. I was wrong. After playing for roughly two hours, I got "the black screen of death". I did what Virtuoso said and I turned off the Automatic Restart toggle and I still got black screen. Hopefully ArenaNet will come out with a patch to fix this, since this problem (for me) has been happening ever since GW went retail.

Here are my specs from dxdiag:

Default Again with the problems

Well, first here are my specs:
Athlon 64 3000+
ASRock K8 motherboard
512MB Samsung PC2700
Audigy 2 sound card
(For cooling 4 fans and a Antec silent case with a 500W Antec PS)
LeadTek Nvidia 6600GT Board
Windows XP Pro. SP1
DirectX9.0c

Now my symptoms happens as follows, usually around 10 minutes before one pops up but I've had it go for about 2 hours before.
1. BSOD, I reboot and I get the BSOD at least 4 more times before my computer will completely boot again
2. Screen freezes but I can move the mouse cursor and I hear a windows *ding* tone when it happens, note: the mouse cursor also changes to the windows cursor instead of the bronze guild wars cursor.
3. Sometimes a random reboot, but not as offen as the other 2.
4. And finally a guild wars error and the game just closes

I have tried EVERYTHING in the post, I keep checking my temps. also and my CPU is running at 55 just after the game reboots the computer so I'm pretty sure its not the temp.
ALL my extra graphics options are disabled on the card and the game, along with the sound and still BSOD.
ALL my drivers and even bios version are up-to-date.
(tried alternative driver as well to no avail.)

I'm finally giving in and buying 1GB of cos. RAM PC3200
and run in dual channel mode, maybe, maybe it will fix the problem. I have tried the locked in memory too (2,3,3,11,2T) and it appears to be crashing a tad bit less but still I can't finish a entire mission.
Also tried underclocking my CPU, it may have helped a little but not by much.

And finally, tried punching my computer, that just appeared to make it worse so don't get fed up and punch your computer, remember microsoft and people who write code for it suck, not your PC. I wish they would just port Guild Wars to Linux, yeah it can be a pain in the ass to set up but I set my linux box up a year ago and haven't had one hickup from it since, but I have reinstalled windows on this machine 5 times! I think porting the game to linux would fix our problems, unless it really is bad coding on the game and there is a memory leak, in that case NCSOFT owes me $50 and everyone here a apology for hiring crappy coders but a E for effort because when I do get it to work its a great game.
Anybody else have any tips that might have worked for them? I'm all ears....

I have heard that uninstalling your current drivers and putting the stock ones on your graphics card helps. I will test that later today.

I went to GuildWars.com and asked them about this blackout issue. They tell me that is a heating issue, even though I ran a heating program and the highest it ever got to was at 60.8C while I was beginning to play. It stayed at a steady 50C.

It's either a heating issue or a driver issue. I do not think this is GW's fault anymore beacuse if it was, EVERYONE would be having this problem.

Hello everyone! Kinda sad that I have to make my 1st post in the Technicians corner...but any who....I'm having pretty much the same problem that everyone else is having. No BSOD for me; my comp just shuts down. Everything freezes and I have just enough time to say "oh shit" and the comp turns itself off. I'm not sure if it is overheating or what...i get to like 93-95 F and I also have a room fan blowing into my comp. Hell I cant remember when I started having problems (after a patch...who knows) You guys think this could be heat related or what? From what I have read, high heat=comp turning off.

I have not seen to many people mentioning problems with ATI cards. I have a Radeon 9250 128MB. 3.00Ghz with 512 RAM...also have SP2.

Oh...I have read al the way though this entire thread...it just amazes me at the sheer amount of people that are having problems! Just thought I would throw in my 2 gp.

I think people saying it's an Over Heating issue is an easy way for them to get rid of the problem.
The only time Heat could be a problem is if you were reaching 80, 90 or 100C. Then I might think you have a really big problem with your machine increasing in such huge steps or your cooling, heatsink etc is no good.
It's incredibly hot here in the UK at the moment, and my machine has increased to a normal running temp from 46c to 54c and I'm running a stock heat sink and fan, with a case fan on the side plate. I don't think I have any others, other than the GPU Fan on my X800pro.
When playing GW the temp rises by a couple of oC, but that is normal due to gaming.

So what am I getting at.

I still think this has something to do with driver conflicts on peoples machines, with regards to Graphics, Mobo and possibly other hardware that they have, and possibly a bad bit of code in the game that is triggering problems in peoples PC's, or some other piece of software that is running on these machines that isn't quite happy when GW runs and causes an error.

Ok, I know it's not happening on everyone's machine so why would it be GW. Maybe because the most common thing between everyone who is having a problem is GW.

I myself don't have a problem and have tried to help many people on these forums get there machines running. However, the real challenge here is getting people to try things out, even if it means rebuilding there computer with a clean install of Windows, and I mean a clean install. Not just an install over the top of your current setup. An install over the top doesn't solve anything, because the problematic files could still be left behind and you hit the same problem. I mean, a complete format of the C: drive and then reinstall a clean install of Windows from then.

At the end of the day, we as Techies give you ideas to try, and a lot of you try them out without success. The really frustrating thing, being a techy myself and working in the IT industry, is not having these machines in front of us so we can see what is happening as there could be any one thing that we might notice that you don't, that could well be key to the problems people are having.

So, all those people that are having problems here. Try your best to notice everything that is going on in the background when running GW. The slightest thing, such as the guy above mentioned the "Ding" he heard in the background when GW crashed. This suggests a Windows error occurred but without the details of that error, we can't help you further.

We need full system specs, name of mobo, ram types, processors etc etc. If we can get a list of stuff going we can see if there is one major factor that is common across the board apart from GW and Windows.

One possible solution, go into MSConfig and disable the options in the General tab under selective startup. Turn off System Ini, Win Ini and Startup Items. Leave Services and Boot Ini alone.
You may get a message asking you to switch these options back on when you reboot, just cancel it. Then start GW again and see what happens.
This helps to cut down on all those programs that start when your PC boots apart from the normal services and boot stuff that are needed to run windows.

Well, that is about all I can think of at the moment, so hope this helps you along in getting this game running and hopefully we get a little more info on your problems and programs you run to see if we can help you out.

Bought GW yesterday, was expiriencing heavey BSOD with kmixer.sys error after 10-15 minutes of gaming.

After reading this thread I run the game with "-nosound" parameter.
Result:
NO CRASH since that time.

...but no sound too, bit suxy.
happy but confused

Any1 knows where I can get the newest SB Audigy 2 Value drivers?

With regards to the Audigy Drivers the latest on the Creative Website is Nov 04. Digital Rights Management 1.88.0025 for Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value series

You can get them by following this link and entering the correct details.

http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/welcome.asp

Also, I would suggest installing the Audio drivers only and uninstall any other form of audio software or drivers that you may have installed on your PC. This way you can determine if it's something to do with the drivers for the Sound Card or another Piece of software supplied by Creative that isn't really all that good.

I tend to find a lot of stuff added with the Creative Packages is pretty useless. Well, to me anyway.
