Check out www.delloutlet.com for less expensive, refurbished models that range $500 and up. You get a lot more hardware since the parts are not technically new, but out of the box, it's often difficult to tell the difference. At about $1200, you can assemble a 15" Dell XPS M1530 with 2.5ghz Core2Duo CPU, 200gig drive, and (most important), an nVidia 8600-GT 256MB video card.
I just plunked down $2400 on a beast of a gaming laptop that would have been ~$5000 new. This gives you an idea of how much you can save going this route. Best of all, you get full warranty coverage, and if you don't like the unit for whatever reason, you can return it within 21 days completely free of ALL costs.
