Exploding CDs
a couple years ago i was playin a little game called red alert 2 and was switchin discs between soviet and allied when my computer froze. i wasnt lookin at my monitor and hadnt realized it froze, so i pressed the eject button a few items. then i heard a crack and my disc tray wouldnt open. later i shut my computer down and opened it to find my disc shattered into thousands of pieces, forcing me to replace my CD drive. does anyone know why this happened???

when I worked at comp-USA many years ago. We had a front loading 32X that use to shoot out CDs from the front of the computers like you would not believe... In that case its a bad pressure point on the drive that is suppose to slow the drive before eject. but instead it ejects while spinning and shoots out on slight pressure contact, like a Frisbee. Keeps my Techs on their toes... lol I think that is why they stopped making those things. Anyway. normally this has to do with the drive not being calibrated properly. The spinning is not level and can cause an oscillation or vibration that could make a disc shatter. I've only had 1 shatter in the drive in the past... and it was in an el-cheapo 52 x cd-rom drive.. Poorly made and very cheap even back 6years ago. you could hear the thing humming like crazy, and it often shook the tower. these are signs of a problem... The newer drives have mechanisms to auto balance the spin of the disc. but you get what you pay for.

derrty: This thing happend to one of my relatives. When he tried to edject the cd, it wouldnt come at all. Instead it exploded in million pieces inside of the computer. Heres the funny thing about this story; This CD was no other than Red Alert 2.
So my relative and you have something in common.

Why exploding CDs? Yuri's trying to assassinate you, obviously, because you're impervious to his mind-control devices. Or at the very least he doesn't want you playing. Watch out for the other disc.

I have done this myself too, scared me to death but the disc was fine
Luckly, I've not had or seen exploding cd's.

i had this happen with my age of empires age of kings cd
i was lucky that soon i got a new cd at the store
the cd drive was never repaired cuz i am lazy
after a few years i got a new computer
however i was able to get every piece of the broken cd but one peice witch is still somewhere in the computers tower.
the funnest thing is weeks before this happend i had a dream where i dropped a cd and it broke into peices all over the place
could this have been a warning?
i belive so. however all is well know.

seems that sometimes companies end up using cds that break up in the drive.
red alert 2 seems to be one of the batches, i hear stories all over about the cds busting.
some american batches of neverwinter nights suffered from the same thing, and i get dc and dvd drives to replace quite a lot at work with cheap bootleg bollywood and (what do they call the music that the indian girls like to listen to, anyway 0.o? the songs from said bollywood movies. you know, where the hero girl sings.....sings when she is sad/happy/angry/depressed/shopping/dating/getting engaded or maried ^^...)
the bootleg music cds too.
all i have to do is ask them what happened, i get a 'cant open the cd or get it out'
just pop the pin in the hole, and out comes cd confette
oh, and dreaming something happend, hm....i get that sometimes, but it usually has to do with my mothers blasted soap opera shows.
and when i tell her, and it happens, i get an earfull^^
*if i could see the lotery numbers, THEN i could use the thing ^^*

Could have been a short in the drive itself, I have seen this happen. A CD is essentially a magnetic coil, so when a high burst of energy is arched to the CD it will blow apart. You can emulate this with a 1.2J cap and discharge through the CD. BOOM!
