Microsoft has decided not to release Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3 to Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center as planned on April 29. The reason? A last-minute compatibility issue with a Microsoft application — Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS).
Here’s the latest from a company spokesperson:
Quote:
“I wanted to update you on today’s planned release to web (RTW) (of XP SP3). In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).
“In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center.
“To help protect our customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Download Center.
“Until we have published a fix for this issue, we advise Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install either service pack. Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers running Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for additional information.
“The fix is currently in testing and will be available as soon as that process is complete.”
Why does it seem that you troll these kind of threads, Loviatar? That's how it appears, to me at least.
It'll be released publicly on May 6th. It is still the official Service Pack 3 release. It is FINAL. No other changes will be made. It is still safe to download and use.
Considering the links posted are direct from Microsoft, they are safe.
What you posted only concerns those who run Microsoft Dymanic RMS. You can read more about it here.
You can still put in direct link URLs (found in my original post), but you won't find it searching the catalog.
The issue for Microsoft Dynamic RMS was recently found (within the past 24 hours or less) and it may relate to MDAC as well. There should be a hotfix available tomorrow to resolve the issue. If you don't have this installed you won't be able to see SP3 on Windows Update. But that's only if the above issue effects your computer.
This is the issue that is holding up release, it's very specific and only a small subset of people are gonna even see it.
People tend to make things a bigger issue than they really are. A majority of users will not use any part of Microsoft's Dynamic RMS so it'll be just fine.
Nightow,
You'll be just fine installing it. The directions I posted will help you with it all.
The .dl_ means it is a compressed file and you just have to expand it, which I explained in my directions to you and Big John Thomas.

Update No. 1: One reader noted that he downloaded SP3 today via a direct link to the executable (which my ZDNet blogging colleague Adrian Kingsley-Hughes pointed to earlier today). A Microsoft spokeswoman said the company is advising users against doing this. The official response:
“Customers should not download Microsoft software from links posted on non-Microsoft websites, when those links point directly to the executable as is the case here. Customers should always download from a page on Microsoft.com that provides all relevant download details, installation instructions, and release notes. In this particular case, it’s possible that some 3rd party websites are linking to the Windows XP SP3 software that we have published for MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Since we cannot confirm the source of every link that 3rd parties provide, out recommendation is that customers wait until we’ve published Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and the Download Center.”
I have to admit: I’m somewhat surprised Microsoft decided to delay the release of SP3 for RMS. RMS is a retail-chain-management app for small/midsize users. I know very few customers who are using it.
From what they're saying next (update 2), I'm not sure it's the last one. But it's very close to it. So I don't think Nightow should panic (a ".dl_" file is a ".dll" that has a temporary modification, it's a trick when installing updates).

show me the official May 6th release date with linkie .
you were wrong on your last call by a long shot so where is your inside information coming from now?
AS FOR TROLLING IF POSTING AN OFFICIAL MICROSOFT ANNOUNCEMENT OF AN INDEFINITE DELAY DATE IS TROLLING SO BE IT.
Yes you can, and you should. But you won't see the update as it's been removed. There's a priori no danger in getting the version Tarun indicates, but it's safer to wait until windowsupdate gives it to you. Well, at least that's what I'd recommend at this point.

TARUN SAYS INDEFINITE DELAY EQUALS MAY 6 GOODIE.
It would help if you actually read and understood what they said. :P

We are also testing a fix, and will make it available once that process is complete. Once they have installed the fix, Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers should be able to run both service packs.

Highlighted the key points. Microsoft Dynamic RMS is most likely not going to be on any end-user's computer. So you're overreacting to something that is not a critical issue for your average Joe User.
As for the May 6th date, it would make sense that it'd be out around then. After all, they did release it to TechNet and MSDN earlier than announced. Neowin even posted dates about SP3's release. The date for OEM, MSDN and TechNet were almost accurate. OEM was accurate, and MSDN/TechNet was a day or so later after some pressure because they originally planned to delay it.
Quote:
Last Tuesday, Microsoft revealed plans to delay the release of XP SP3 to MSDN and TechNet subscribers until May 2 due to high demand for Vista SP1, but reversed its decision the following day.
I can understand being concerned about this having an ill effect on some users, but the way and method you posted makes it look as though you're extremely paranoid. You have no reason whatsoever to say to say "FORGET ANY SO CALLED RELEASE DATE BY THE OP." SP3 did indeed appear to some users on Windows Update today (and even Monday night), which means it technically was released. Today, April 29th is also the scheduled release of Windows XP SP3 on Windows Update.
It helps to research things you're posting about. You remind me of the story about the boy who cried wolf. Do some more research on Microsoft Dymanic RMS before you go posting like you did.

At this time you might not be able to get it. It has only been appearing for some users (not everyone) as mentioned in my first post.

The SP3 team will be adding filters so if they detect Microsoft Dynamics RMS then they will not see SP3 until the hotfix gets released to correct the issue discovered.

Reason: Fixed Loviatar's broken quote methods which broke my post.
Tarun.thanks for the advice mate but like I said, I already reinstalled using a slipstreamed XPsp3 disc.It wasn't my main machine so it wasn't a problem for me.I had already looked into the issue and apparently its caused by this rtm release being installed over an earlier release which is strange because I hadn't installed an earlier one,it was a pretty clean install I had to replace the hard drive only about 7 weeks ago.
Personally I won't rush to install it on my main machines until I do a reinstall which I do about twice a year anyway. There's nothing like a nice clean install of windows, untill you stick an anti-virus package on and watch it slow down by about 500%
Everyone is souping Service Pack 3 like it is going to revolutionize XP... hahaha
It is going to be a cumulative rollup of SP1, SP2, and the 105 or so updates since then. There may be additional rolled in patches, however, this is more of a move on Microsoft's part to limit bandwidth on their update servers. Currently, a fresh install of XP with SP2 will need 105 updates (office included) to be up-to-date. Makes sense to roll that up into a SP.
So you can all calm down and go back to trolling the Ursan Blessing threads.
well looks like i was right all along!as i said it is NOT avalible publicly msdn is NOT for the general public
what im saying mate is that you are telling people to update to a version that is for beta use only!! MSDN is not your avg joe public

Interestingly, Microsoft Update just gave me the option to install SP3. I've been updating PCs all morning and it just now gave me the option to do it.
Through the official site, officially. Try it and see if it works for you.
Yeah, I installed it on one of the test laptops at work. Took about an hour, maybe a little more. Didn't notice much, but I didn't get to really test it out.
Anyway, fun stuff. Got me out of other work this afternoon at least.
