Bringin to the computer shop is my last resort, i dont think this is a major problem.
THe computer DID turn on when i pressed the reset button before. BUt now this trick isnt workin anymore. This makes me think that its not much of a cpu/gpu issue but maybe the mobo?

edit/ i also raned a 3dmark06 benchmark yesterday? does this screw it up o-o?

In my experience, start as basic as possible. power supply, 1 hard drive, minimum ram?( 1 stick in the 1st slot), monitor, keyboard and mouse. fire up the comp. do you get a beep? If no, then move to step 1. If yes, move to step 2.

do you get any beeps? If so how many and is there a pattern. Does it sound like moaning demons? does the power supply fan come on?

2. getting 1 beep w/ minimal hardware. start adding in 1 piece of hardware at a time until it fails. What piece causes the fail? This will prob need replaced. but then try to boot with just that piece does it boot?

It really sounds like your video card is dead, as I said before I had similar problems before. I had to press the power button a few times to get the computer to boot with anything on the monitor. As Dark kail stated, theres only a few hardware things that could be causing you not to boot. You can test the cpu and memory by removing them one at a time, you should get a bios screen stating that one of those are missing. CPU is usually the least likely to be having problems. I would check to see if the video card is firmly seated in the slot by removing it then putting it back. The same for the power going to the video card (if the video card requires it) But either way unless its something loose its a part that has gone bad.

I'd take it to the shop first. Since you're inexperienced with computers I'd let them take out the CMOS battery, so if they screw it up they have to pay for it. You, by accident, may make the problem worse by playing around inside the case.

A benchmark may have caused a hardware failure, although this is rare. Did you run a "burn in" test with the benchmark software? Or just a simulated burn in?

No it probably didn't screw it up, but might have stressed the video card enough to die, which it would have in the near future anyway. Its usually a good idea to run stress tests on a new computer anyway, the earlier you detect a failing piece of hardware the more likely you get it replaced for free.
If you don't feel comfortable removing parts of a computer get a local computer shop to do this, they probably wont charge much more than $50. But as as long as your careful, remember where everything went when you removed it, and discharge static electricity its not hard to work on a computer.

Your PC not doing anything but turning on the fans and pretty lights constitutes as a "major problem". A benchmark might have brought on the hardware failure. Mobo issue is also possible although unlikely. It's impossible to tell what part is failing without the details.

Your best bet is a computer shop at this point.

hmm the cmos battery is right underneath my gpu, i have a feeling its my HDD i put my finger over it not much vibration..both gpu fan still spinning not sure about the inside though. I still dont think its my GPU cos i was playin cod4 and its all good!

Nope, you can boot without a HDD installed.

Yeah, your HD shouldn't vibrate noticeably. And it will boot without it. But it won't boot without graphics.

But we've basically ruled those two out, since there are no POST beeps.

Try clearing the CMOS first. It's similar to what they were saying about removing the battery, but not as drastic. There should be a jumper near the battery that you move to clear the CMOS and then move it back to where it was (Check the manual!)

Next, make sure that all connectors on the mobo, drives, etc, are fully seated. Sometimes it helps to unplug them and plug them back in. Make sure the video card is fully seated in it's slot.

If that doesn't work - start with the most basic:

Un-plug everything from the mother board - except the power supply connector and the speaker (if it's external). Remove all the cards, including the video card. Remove the RAM. That is, you should have nothing on the motherboard except the cpu (with heatsink&fan) and the power supply connected and the speaker (if external - some mobos have a small spkr on-board)

Since you could even have a bad power switch or reset button (and you disconnected those too, right?) - short across the power switch connector with a screwdriver (or whatever) (no shock/short hazard). The power should come on and you should get a bunch of beeps (telling you there is no RAM and/or video present.)

If you get no beeps, it comes down to bad mobo (or BIOS settings), bad cpu (or BIOS settings), a bad speaker (no likely), or a bad power supply.

If you do get beeps, plug in the RAM and try again. (Turn it off first - duh) You should get beeps telling you there's no video card. No beeps = bad RAM.

Next you can plug the power switch back in to make things easier and install the video card.

With the video card installed, you should get a single beep when it starts up, indicating it passed POST. If not, it could be a bad video card (or power switch stuck on)

If it works, continue plugging things back in (powering off in between - duh) until it stops working. At that point you will either have found the bad part or found the point where the power supply craps out.

Really important step here... or you won't hear any beeps at all. If they're external speakers, make sure they're hooked up to the audio output at the back, plugged in, and turned on. If it's a case speaker, make sure it's connected to the correct place in the front panel header area.

Umm, you are using an MSI board. It is highly likely that the flash system corrupted, which can temporarily corrupt the Core system that MSi uses.

Reset your BIOS/clear the CMOS. While the PC is off, directly above the battery (north) there is a small round button. Press and hold it down for 10 seconds. Release the button, and restart the system. If the problem persists, take out all the components except the graphics card, power source, RAM, and CPU. If it doesn't boot at that point, remove the RAM. It should give a beep code of approx 6-8 beeps, typically 8. If this is the the case, put back in ONE stick of RAM. If it fails to boot again, alternate each stick of RAM until you have tried each one alone in DIMM slot 1.

If it fails to boot each time, then either your graphics card is dead, or all of your RAM is dead. The next step would be to remove your CPU. However, these issues get too complex. If your motherboard (I couldn't tell from any high-res reference pictures I tried to pull off our server) has a POST CODE display LED system (it will be a gray box that displays a two digit (alpha numeric) code according to the POST status) You should find it near the CoreCell system chip, above the battery. Just look. If it does, tell me the code you are seeing (that last one it displays during the boot you are "not seeing")

"Sumthing less practical"? Surely more practical!

All you have left to try is the one thing you haven't tried: Removing the graphics card. Since it's going back to the shop anyway, you might not bother - but hey, it could save you money.
