May 8th 2008 Update and Multiple Clients
The issue:
Quote:
One of the latest updates (May 8th, 2008) stated that a bug has been fixed with the launcher appearing twice when launching the game. Now, I've never encountered the problem the update was referring to, but now I face an issue the very same update caused.
I have multiple Guild Wars accounts, and to be able to transfer items between my accounts, I was using a technical method that allowed launching multiple GW Clients on one operating system. (This method involved having multiple Guild Wars directories, editing Gw.exe, and editing the registry.) I didn't invent this method (I could never do so on my own), but I know many other GW players who used it.
Since the update, the method no longer works (it just switches to the currently running client when the other one is being started), so it has become difficult to transfer items between accounts without using multiple computers.
|
I'm looking for a method that can be used to run multiple GW clients on one OS. If anyone knows one, please reply and let me know.
Thank you.

This should still work ; http://www.gwx2.co.nr/
If not, then I have no idea (And as far as I know, it's completely safe, checked, double checked on a clean system, and it's fine.)

Thank you, that looks great. I didn't know there were tools out there to do that. Thanks for the link.

Yeah, Gwx2 is a good program. No viruses and works as intended.

QFT +1 Yeah I am amazed on how many people use simple passwords, and on multiple accounts. It's their own fault for not choosing a unique password.

This might sound insulting as you could have already done it.
Have you copied over the gw.exe file from the original installation into your gw2 (or whatever you call it) folder, deleted the old .exe, renamed the new one and used a hex editor to change all the instances of 'guild wars' in the file?
I always forget to do that

Let's assume your original installation is C:\Program Files\Guild Wars.
Make a new folder, let's say C:\Program Files\GW2 (doesn't matter where you make it)
From the original folder, copy over gw.exe and gw.dat - nothing else.
Run gwx2 - a file requestor will open up and ask where the gw.exe files are located - browse to the above folders.
That's all there is to it - when the two windows open, just make sure that they open the two different accounts. It will not work with only one account.
You will find that periodically gwx2 will only open a single window - all you have to do then is re-copy gw.exe from folder 1 to folder 2. This happens after updates.

To the OP. You did something wrong. I am right now, at this very moment, running two accounts on one PC by simply modifying my GW.exe with a hex editor.
It sounds more like you are not changing your registry entry. Remember, even if you rename the .exe, unless you have another registry entry to point at the 2nd GW folder it will only open the original client. Always.
Don't wanna sound rude...but your doin it wrong if it's not working. The update in no way changes how your registry directs it's processes.

Sorry, wasn't able to check the thread for a few days. Thank you all for the advice, but I was doing everything as most of you described it, even updated the registry before starting the clients. I had these processes automatized by batch files I wrote though, so they might just have been outdated. It's not a problem now though, the application posted by Miskav makes it far more simple.
I'm not really worried about account hacks, I'm using software to track processes that try to capture keys, and there seems to be no such problem with GWx2 so far.

Glad you got it sorted out then, I don't run GWX2 clients anymore, kind of lost the need to do it.
But the GWx2 deal seems to be the easiest way now.. I'm just old school. But I have a little patch.exe that makes patching the old school way really fast, you don't have to open up hexeditor every time, so that's why I still used it.

Am I correct that GWx2 wont work with Vista due to how it takes over the computer?

No.
It works fine on Vista - 32bit or 64.

issue with running 4 copys at once. after each update i do the hex edit to the other 3 but whenever i load them up for the first time after each update my pc locks up for starting each of the 3 copys. is there a way around this or possibly adding in 2 more more options to be run on the gwx2 file?

Eek - four copies oO
Unless the hex ed expert is still around, I can't help there. Also, it's GWx2 - I think we're still waiting for GWx4 ^^

I demand to run 18 clients on 18 different screens, all at UHD resolution! If my demands are not met, all of your processors with revert to 130nm technology.
