whoa that was really weird. I was about 75% through the update when I checked my .dat file. It apeared to be ~4,100,000 kb. come back a bit later, the game says that it had downloaded about 250 more mega bytes (250,000kb) I check the .dat file and it says 6,160,058 and I still have 2% to go... looks like im gunna have to do the delete and redownload like Gaile said -_-

People with larger Gw.dat files should see them stay the same or slowly shrink over time.

Well my file is size is about 3.5gb, but a guildy has a file that is 6.2gb. It seems his game should be working veeeery slowly

Maybe they have debug version or something who knows, but 200mb or so isn't too huge a chunk (unless you're really strapped for disk space in which case you'll end up having problems in future anyway...)
Just to point out you don't need to delete the original file. Either rename it, or just rename the whole Guild Wars folder, then reinstall from CDs first. This should help cut down the amount you need to download again, and also if you decide to change your mind you can simply go back to the old copy.
After that if all's well and good you can go ahead and delete the old copy.

My GW.dat file was about 2.2 Gb on my old PC. It was in a 4GB partition.
Around June I got a new PC with a 250Gb drive. Since then (pre current update) it's blown out to 3.5GB. Seeing as I'm on dial up I've assumed that its due to newly uncompressed files or GW had decided to allocate more space for itself, for whatever reason e.g better running performance.

As said by Gaile a complete image is 2.7 GB.
I found a thread in another Forum concerning this issue, which includes a solution for faction owners that avoids downloading all the stuff again.
It is in german though.
http://guildwars-forum.onlinewelten....ghlight=gw.dat
It has many speculations and two approaches to solve the problem, but one of them stopped working (the -repair option).
The (working!) translated solution from ObiWan07:
(optionally) -run the game with the "-image" command
-copy the content of the first disk of Factions to your harddrive.
-replace the gw.dat file in that new folder with your old, big gw.dat
-deinstall Guild Wars
-change the data\cdrom.ini in that folder
from
Code:
[CDROM]
Program=Guild Wars
Chapter=2
Disc=1,2
Bytes=599089664,1129912320
Serial=20060313xxxx
to
Code:
[CDROM]
Program=Guild Wars
Chapter=2
Disc=1
-run the setup.exe from that folder on your HD.
The setup now uses your old gw.dat file to install GW, and extracts all usable data from it (it will not ask for a second cd as you removed that line).
It will NOT copy the useless data that causes the dat file to grow unnaturally big.
If you run -image before doing that you will have a complete image of about 2.7 GB.
It worked for me. It does not DL any data when i run -image again, and there are no downloads ingame on area change.
I dont know if it works with a Prophecies CD.

Great, I just did this and it seemed to work fine. Reduced my gw.dat from 3.3gb to 2.7gb.

Yes I think I'm gonna have to. When I load any area it goes straight to 100%, but remains on the loading screen for 10-15 seconds with the hard drive thrashing really hard. It never used to, it must be searching through the 7GB file.

That works well.
Went from a total 7.4 GBs after the complete image to 2.4 GBs.
This should be put in the community works forum or something.

What gails says apparently isn't quite true.
My GW.dat was only around the normal size before the update yesterday - it was 2.4 GB or so now it's 4.5 GB - and it's not like I downloaded that much it was only around 450 MB.
It would if I had a way to trim it down without reinstalling.
EDIT: I did the download with the -image command
EDIT2: I did the fix above it worked like a charm - now my Gw.dat has slimmed down to 2,678,130,688 bytes
EDIT3: after having logged in to all of my 3 accounts the size DROPPED!!! to 2,670,903,296.
