A few months ago, I bought a new laptop. It's great and everything works fine, but whenever I try to play Guild Wars i get a black screen and it says: Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered. I've played some other games, like WoW for a few months now but it doesn't have problems running those games. It only seems to happen with Guild Wars for me.

I've googled it and found loads of forums with people that have the same problem. I've read some of the forums but none of them offers a solution. Most of the threads on those forums were actually from 2007, and it seems to be happening since Vista was released.Since we're almost 2 years later now, I guess that there must be a solution for this...

I've tried installing my drivers but this doesn't seem to work.

Specs of my laptop:

2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8300, 4GB DDR2 RAM , 320GB hard disk (2x 250GB tested), Blu-ray DL writer, Nvidia GeForce 9500M GS, 18.4in 1,920 x 1,080 TFT, 802.11a/b/g/draft n, 1.3mp webcam, 4x USB, HDMI, VGA, Windows Vista Home Premium, 1yr RTB warranty, 441 x 300 x 44mm, 4.2kg.

The problems you are experiencing are a very common one with vista and graphically intensive applications.

Guildwars itself is certified to run on vista and it has been shown not to be an issue with guildwars itself.

The issue stems from how Vista manages graphically intensive applications and the relationship with the graphics card. The best thing to do is to get the latest version of the driver for your video card, downloaded from Nvidia, rather than to use the driver that came with the card, as this is usually outdated.

Also, install the latest vista updates as there have been a few tweeks to the graphical management system over the last 2 years since its release.

If you have the option though, my advice would be to uninstall vista, break the disks and never touch it again. Install XP instead and everything will just work. Vista sucks ass, and unfortunately the people who suffer are the end users. Every company I know has refused to install Vista in spite of its claimed benefits purely because of all the known and outstanding issues.

Basically vista sucks.

Horrible, horrible advice. Vista runs GW perfectly fine.

My advice would be to go to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ and get a better driver. There's a FAQ there on how to install those drivers.

I run 177.79 on my laptop and get max frame rate that never dips or stutters.

Trying to install the drivers on that site now.

EDIT: I installed the latest Vista driver (Driver Agent doesn't say my graphic card driver is outdated anymore) and it's still happening.

I've been installing drivers etc, but i'm still getting the error.
Anyone out there that had the same problem and found a way to fix it ?

Have you tried using nvidia's automatic driver updater?

Yes I have, but it says my current driver is already up-to-date.
