My internet speed is now slower than roommates speed
Hey guys, its Thomas and I have an inquiry to put out there. I have an Alienware Aurora desktop computer and I've had it ever since Nov. 2007. Lemme just say it's fast, its a dual core processor AMD, 4 GB DDR2 Ram, nvidia geforce 8800GTX 768MB graphics, dual gigabit ethernet ports. Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium (I'm the only one w/ Vista in my apt)
Now, if any of you have had AT&T Uverse high speed fiber optics internet, you know that the bandwidth Lan-line wise goes through the power-grid of the home or apt with the use of these power-outlet adapters connecting cat5/6 cords to your desktops. So you don't need any long 50-100 ft ethernet cables reaching from the modem to the bedrooms. Me and my 3 other roommates share an apartment, we each are paired up in a bedroom, 2 in each bedroom. The modem is made by 2Wire. It provides on its own, wireless, and 4 port lan-line connections to 4 computers.
Ok so on to the problem, my 3 roommates (2 roomies have windows XP Home Premium, another a Macbook - Yes I'm the only one with Vista as my OS) and I share the internet, it's 5.7 Mb/s highspeed internet. When we first got this internet installed, my Alienware ran at 5.7-5.9 mb/s speed along with all my other roommates. This was about 3-4 months ago.
NOW, their computers all run the same speed, and yet my desktop computer only runs at anywhere from 3-4.0 mb/s whenever I run the http://www.speedtest.net/ . I don't know what has caused this slight slowdown of internet speed!! I keep my alienware clean of viruses, malware, etc. I use Flock as my internet browser (built off the firefox engine) and I've also tried internet exporer, still the same slower speed. I have also tried clearing out my internet cookies/temp files, it's done nothing.
So it's got to be something slowing my speed between my computer and the internet connection to the wall outlet. Because all my other roommates computers are still running the same speed since the beginning. Please help guys! Nothing has changed for my computer except, I install windows updates, I've installed a few programs (but they don't require internet connection). I test my internet connection while I have HP Digital Monitor on (for my printer), Logitech G-Series Keyboard Profiler (for my G15 keyboard), and Logitech GamePanel Manager (for G15 keyboard). And that's it! My computer still runs blazing fast, it's just my internet speed is slightly slower than all other computers on the network. Please help!! Could it have something to do with my difference in OS vs. my roommates? But I've had my speed at 5.7-5.9 mb/s before!

Test to see if the problem comes from your wall socket: ask your roommates to connect their computer to it and test their speed.

Could it be the TCP Half Open thing? I use the Lvllord.de patch to increase mine... maybe that would help?

good idea Fril, I'll try that with my roommates comp.
refer: I went to the website for Lvllord.de and I think it's saying that's for Windows XP users... I'm windows Vista 32bit Home Premium. The guy of the website posted that half-TCP port news like 2005... I don't think that would help since this computer has had high speeds just in the last 3-4 months. Now unless microsoft has released something for Vista in the last weeks an update that has for some reason slowed my internet connection to my computer...I think that's what I should be looking for.
