Can't log in
Hi, I need some help.
I've never had a problem logging back into the game until yesterday.
I was on my to collect the items needed for Nick when I was booted off the game. I tried to log back in but kept getting a 005 error message.
Lastnight I called my service provider because I don't know much about computers, and was told all is fine with my connection. The guy walked me through steps to make sure my firewall and virus program wasn't suddenly blocking the game. It wasn't.
This morning I unistalled then reinstalled the GW client, I can get to my character selection screen, but when it tries to load me into the game, I get the damn 005 message again.
My computer is a Dell and about a year old with Vista.
Like I said, I've never had a problem before, anyone have any ideas of how to fix this?

Are you using a hardline connection or a router? If you are on a wireless network and are using vista you can try a couple things that ar quick and easy. That even with no computer knowledge you can do.
1)If you are on a wireless network do this. Click the icon down by your clock. The icon is 2 computers and the globe. Click Networking and Sharing Center. At the top of the window that pops up you see a computer labeled as whatever the name of your computer name is. Then you see a green line pointing to what looks kind of like 2 moniters connected by a pipe. It is labeled whatever your network is called. A second green line will lead to a Globe labeled Internet. If either line isn't green you should be able to "diagnose the problem" and Vista will sometimes fix itself if something happened with the router or your networking settings.
A side note make sure you have a good connection to your router. It should be like 3-5 bars. The higher the better. If you are only getting 1-2 your connection probably isn't strong enough to maintain the speed required by guild wars to send and recieve information from your computer.
The other thing to try.
Go to your command prompt. Easy way to find it. Open start menu and type in the search box "command prompt" without the "". Make sure you find it and right click it. Then choose run as administrator. Type ipconfig /release then a bunch of stuff is going to pop up. Now type ipconfig /renew. Your computer should release it's ip from the network. This will cause you to lose internet connection. Then it will renew it and request another IP. Most of the time your router gives it the same ip adress. You can manually set it but that takes awhile to explain. You also have a chance to brick your router when you manually set your IP if you don't know what your doing. Then you have a cool looking paper weight. Releasing your ip will not speed up your connection or make it stronger but it takes like 2 secs so it is worth a shot.
I will try to think of some other causes later. It is wierd that you have access to a browser and can make it to websites with relative ease and not login into gw's.
Are you using a highspeed connection? You could try reseting your router. Simply unplug the power cord from the back of the router box wait 10-20 secs plug it back in. Wireless signals always are better traveling up. So if you are below your box by like a floor in your house you will get a worse signal. You could get a signal extender and connect it to your router and give you better signal strength and more distance on it if your connection is weak.

I have satellite high speed. My computer is hooked into a box called a Surf Beam. I've unplugged it then plugged it back in ten minutes later. Did your command promt thing and still the same error message from GW.
I went into the network and sharing place, I have a green line running between the computer icon and a house icon and a green line from the house to the globe icon. This is what it says for my connection activity
Bytes sent 283,406
Recieved 6,021,575
I've disabled my firewall, reset the network adapter again, still getting 005 error.
One thing I did notice, is in my connection status there is a thing that says
IPv6 connectivity: Limited
Not sure what that means, I have no trouble getting into anywhere on the net except the GW game.

i'm having the exact same problem , my internet connection is working perfectly...but guildwars wont load after i select my character or try to create a new one . also to the guy above me , i'm from Romania , but i dont think the problem has something to do with location.

Ah yes, the old "unable to connect" error. Since you were playing and then started getting the error it is probably not a problem on your end, so you can stop trying to "fix" things. You may just bugger something up that was working.
Those errors are usually caused by there being a bad server/router somewhere between you and GW, and provided it's not in your ISP's system, there's probably not a lot you can do except wait for it to clear up.

I think the router(s) in question causing trouble for a LOT of people are routers close to anet or anet's ISP, where a majority of the world connects through. Anet says time and time again that the servers are fine, now...if you believe them, like I kinda do, the possibility for routers BEYOND Anet's ISP to be causing a problem isn't that far from the truth., really. If you know how routers and the internet work, you can kinda understand the situation more. There really isn't a whole lot you can do until that router is attended to by the company or person managing it or the links are repaired, Router tables also get messed up, and with thousands of routers connecting around it, it most likely takes hours/days to refill the routing table in it's memory if there was a problem...etc etc.
