If you have the possibility of running an ethernet cable up to your room, do it. I know a lot of people swear by wireless - I just swear at it.
Wireless connections are more likely to suffer lag. Wireless isn't as pervasive as they'd have you believe - having the router on a different floor might be fine, but then again it might be total crap.
Connecting your router via USB is also crap.
Is that router supplied by Virgin? Crap.
Have a look in your local Maplins (or Curry's (shudder)) - there's a wide range of cable modems available, and a lot of them are emblazoned with "Compatible with Virgin Broadband" or similar tosh.
