Default Startup Help

Alright Iv had my own built rig with the help of the now formly dead gameamp guides and the helpful people there.

Asus PN5-D 775 lga
Intel Core Duo Wolfdale 3.0Ghz, E8500 (i think it is, cant remember)
4 Gigs of patriot ram
Nvidia Geforce 8500gt
250GB HD
OcZ 600W BN PSU lots of rails (bought over weekend to fix and cover old one which fan died)
Front case fan, running vista

I dont know why but when i started the computer after putting in the BN PSU, it didnt start, i took a break and when i came back it started up well. I continued into my desktop and just wanted to see my PC's temperature. I turned on my coretemp program and saw it went up nearly 30 degrees in celcius. I am in shock. I planned to do a clean sweep of my HD and reformat it. I try AGAIN AND AGAIN but i cannot get the vista settup from boot.

Also it shuts off pederiocally (bad speller, i dont want to see english teachers, kinda pissed on the subject) for now reason. My only suspicon of this is that when i cleaned the computer of dust when the old PSU died i noticed some Yellowish stain on the CPU and was confused. I later found out it was (what I understand ) thermal paste that was used and I have a few questions...

1. Do I need to buy some thermal paste or w/e its called for my CPU?
2. Why did my PC go up 30 celciuswhen i bought a better PSU?
3. Is it that because the thermal paste is wasted and no more on the CPU that my computer shuts off for no reason?

Please help me.

EDIT: I tried to reformat windows but IT WILL NOT let me even get to the windows installation from boot, it would go right away to my password screen and then desktop. I want to reformat, i tried from desktop and autorun the dick, but i want to erase all info and make a new partion. It says boot setup from disk. What does that mean?

My computer is still shutting down after a few min... all fans for PSU, CPU, and additional fan work well and arent stopping? why me...

only reason that comes to mind is that you've accidentally bumped the CPU fan and possibly dislodged it. or, you've taken off the fan without reapplying thermal paste (and yes, all modern CPUs need it). a wilder guess is that you've accidentally overclocked the CPU to ridiculous speeds, or added a lot more voltage to the CPU in some way.

and yes, if the CPU is overheating, it will shut down the computer to prevent damage.

some additional pointers:

-to get your computer to boot from your windows disk, change the boot order in the BIOS so that your cd/dvd drive comes before harddrive.
-it's spelled periodically. you were pretty close. it helps to know exactly how the word sounds when typing it.

well the funny thiing is that when i cleaned the computer on last thursday, i spent an hour putting back the CPU fan. I was furious but i correctly put it back on.

On to your second thought, i dont know how to overclock and i dont need to i only run GW, CoD:WaW and casual internet, so thats out of the question.

So im probably correct by saying that the stain i saw on the CPU cover itself is the thermal paste? alright then can someone please tell me which thermal paste i should buy because im looking at newegg and theres a hole list of them but they all look the same. I need someone to point me out a good one i can use... from what im reading.. i cant tell the difference for the system requirements.

EDIT: i read about different types of paste and i decided on ceramic because im a newb to putting paste on and also to be safe. just wondering if this was ceramic or metal?

let me guess, you wiped off that "stain"? yeah, that's the thermal paste. you'll need to reapply it.

the one you'll want to use is called "arctic silver 5". it is one of the most effective thermal compounds available.

oh yes, and before you squish it all over the place, here's how to apply it properly. it's actually pretty simple:
-turn off your system (it should be off anyways with no thermal paste), make sure it's cooled off, and take off the cpu cooler.
-place one dab of thermal paste on the middle of your cpu, about half the size of your pinky fingernail
-take your cpu cooler, and press it down directly on top of your cpu. this effectively spreads the paste evenly.
-do up the latches carefully and correctly. make sure it's firmly seated.

if you do this properly, your computer should be fine. you'll notice a drop in CPU temperatures immediately. run some games that will make your CPU work (CoD:WaW is good enough) to let it heat it up a bit and "burn in" the thermal paste.

yea just wanted to know about that, also is that artic silver 5 a ceramic or metal based? i just want to be safe because i dont know how to use correctly it all and id rather be safe for now. after i use up all the ceramic ill go for metal. :P

arctic silver 5 is metallic based, so it will conduct electricity. it won't matter at all if you don't overapply it. if you do, it might seep off of the CPU top surface (it will probably short-circuit your computer if that happens). fortunately CPUs are large; you'll need ALOT of paste for it to short-circuit anything.

well i read somewhere that intel processors that are LGA775 slots are difficult a bit for thermal paste. since the processor is square and the heatsink is circluar... is this true?

nope. because the contact point is still square, it hardly matters what shape the cooler is.

My father said to me he get me to this SPECIAL electronics store he knows, we went and i bought some company i never heard before but decided to buy. BTW it was a silicone. I decided why not because I wouldnt have to wait. I come home clean up and suit it up... i get excited and yada yada i put all wires in and run coretemp and i see that instead of the fireball of yesterday 125 C and up... it started at 71-75C... tried to start up GW and it says ABOVE 125 C... even going on the internet raises it to 90C. I did however get into bios and make CD drive go ahead of the HD.

One thing i did notice was on the back of this package for the thermal compound... it said "bleed time 24hours". What does that mean?

The company is GC electronics. BIG supply company. Do i have to wait 24 hours for it to fully effect?

Please i need help ASAP if i need to order some artic silver because im just mad.. i havent played gw in 2 weeks... im starting to go crazy.

not particularly sure, but i believe "bleed time" is the amount of time the compound will remain liquid. in this cause, i suppose it means that you're supposed to leave the computer OFF for a day before turning it on again.

either way 75C is way too high for a core 2 duo. your CPU is now hotter than my old pentium 4.

here's what i would do:
-turn off computer and reapply the thermal paste, using my instructions above
-leave it off for 24 hours
-turn it back on after 24hours then check temperature. if it is dramatically lower, then great. if not, you should probably invest in the arctic silver 5.

an alternative is to bring the system in to a local, small computer shop, and ask them to help you. they'll often carry arctic silver 5, and will apply it for you either for free or for a small fee. i don't know any good places near where you live, so you'll have to research this on your own.

Just for reference and comparisons sake, because I got the exact same mobo and CPU, but mine clocks at 3.8Ghz, and doesn't go above 50C under load. Idle temp around 32C-35C. I'm also using the Arctic Silver 5 and a Zalman CN9700 CPU fan. I agree with moriz, 75C is way too high. May I ask what CPU fan you're using? Could it be that your Vcore is too high?

Well (the events ill tell you is after i posted) I re applyed the paste i had and instead of just giving it a drop i spread it out by myself with a credit card. I started everything up...first i reformatted, then other stuff yda yada i got to coretemp. It was first when i opened it up at 55C which was much better but i was running windows updates so go figure, had 41 of them to download. After the updates it went to an idle 35 C. That was what i wanted.Alas, when i would run a program for some reason and this never happened before... MY CPU usage (meter from vista sidewall thing) went up to 100%... before last week it rarely went above 70%. This made the tmep of both processors go up to the 90's C. I was a bit furious.

Side note I never saw with coretemp before 2 weeks ago it go above 70C even running gw or COD:WaW.

As for the fan im running its the processors original fan... some intel.(regular)

From what I read in different Forums, coretemp doesn't show the correct temperature on E8x00 series. Having tried it myself by using CoreTemp and RealTemp, the latter one showed lower readings than the former.

If it's the same one I got with the processor, than you can ditch that one. It has horrible cooling. I suggest you get another CPU fan, there are plenty out there that do the job well. I can recommend the one I got, the Zalman CNPS9700A LED. It's a bitch to mount though, because there's not much space on the mobo because of the massive NB heatsink.

Other good makes are Arctic Cooling, Coolermaster, Noctua, Scythe and Thermaltake. Make sure it supports socket Intel 775.

With a good CPU fan you should be able to see some great difference in cooling, especially under load. Oh and don't forget the Arctic Silver 5.

the temperature sensors will never actually give you an actual temperature. all it gives you is the distance until "TJ max", which is what the processor consider its maximum temperature until it shuts itself down. the reason why coretemp and realtemp gives different reading is because they are set to different TJ Max temperatures. one is set to 95C, the other to 100C. this is why one reports higher temps, and always 5C higher.

the intel's stock coolers are fairly decent. as long as you don't do crazy overclocks, they should be good enough. hell, i've overclocked my E7200 to 3.2ghz, and it idles at 36C with the stock cooler.

Thank you both for the information that you have given... at the moment as im typing guild wars is loading up (downloading all places with -image)

I was thinking about the heatsink and fan that Intel gave me... it might be to weak. I mean i dont overclock... i dont run everything at high settings. At the most i run WaW with some high settings.

I would need some help, if you please to help me find a new heatsink+fan that would suit me best. I have a LGA 755 CPU chip, i dont want it THAT heavy, other then that just under $100 would be good.

It's a socket LGA 775 you want.

I don't think the most expensive one is more than a 100 bucks, most high end CPU coolers range probably between 50$ and 70$. If your budget is just under 100$, you should definitely get a high end one. Like I said, the one I got is excellent. You might want to get the new one from Zalman though. Other than that... heavy CPU fans are usually heavy because they are made out of copper, which is the best material to conduct heat. With that budget don't hesitate to get a good one. Try looking for products from the makers I listed above. Asus has some pretty good ones too, the Silent Knight is apparently a good one.

Honestly though, most CPU fans above 20$ are better than the intel stock fan, and unless you don't overclock, you shouldn't really need a high end fan.

However, I'm not sure how much this will help in the end. Getting a good CPU fan should help you, but you'd probably still have high temperatures, even though not as high as the current ones. If you still have high temps with the new fan, you should probably RMA the processor. :S

@ moriz:

The stock fan that I got with my E8500 was really small and thin, and the cooling was mediocre at best. The stock fan on my E6750 was alot bigger and better.
