Hey guys sorry if this isnt meant to be posted on guru forums..

Im having trouble burning dvds
I have windows xp, comp is a Compaq Presario..

im trying to burn films to Dvd in the AVI format,
ive tried through windows media player and just got errors..
Now ive downloaded nero and even when the burns complete the disks dont work in Xbox 360 or in dvd players (ive tried 2)
the disks are Maxwell ProX Dvd+R.

Can anybody help me sort this out please?

You need to convert the .avi file to dvd format using a program first. Not sure what is used these days but one that use to work was dvd santa. If the video is not in DVD format it has to be converted before you can burn a "video dvd"

basically you'll need to convert the avi into dvd format. there are numerous ways to do this, and the above link has many tutorials explaining the numerous methods (how to convert to dvd mpeg2)

depending on which version of nero you have, it can do it. but the program i am currently using, and am liking a lot (i have tried quite a few), is dvdflick. best part bout it is that its free.

When I want to burn avi files to dvd as avi files"my dvd player can use that format" I use imgburn.

To convert avi files to standard dvd format I use convertxdvd.

If I want to shrink a dvd to fit on a cd or a dual layer dvd to single I use dvdshrink.

For all other converting I use any video converter

That should cover any eventuality.
If you want any other software check out Oldversion.com for older free versions of commercial programs.

forgot to mention don't burn dvd's at the maximum speed its a good way to get lots of failures, though you do get coasters for your trouble.
I can burn at 16x but I find 8x gives me almost no failures.

Or, if you're serious about the quality of your output, AviSynth (+ VirtualDub) + QuEnc + Audacity + sound encoder of your choice* + DVDAuthorGUI + ImgBurn.

*BeSweet is supposed to be the best, but that damn thing has never worked right for me. I use ffmpegGUI.

Of course, you can't be a total idiot if you're going to use AviSynth.

Just took a brief look at their webpage. AviSynth support and ffmpeg to decode video... Looks promising. I wonder what they use for mpeg encoding? And can it do VBR? 2-pass encoding?

DVD Flick uses ffmpeg for encoding audio and video, as well as the decoding.

Last time I checked(2007), BeSweet did not handle ac3 encoding correctly. It was pretty awful.

The OP probably could use an all-in-one solution, but my work flow is similar to yours, Chthon, except I use TMPGEnc to encode and guifordvdauthor instead of dvdauthorgui. TMPGEnc's really slow, but the quality is better(IMO) than QuEnc. I prefer ffmpeg or HcEnc to QuEnc.

edit: ffmpeg supports 2-pass VBR encoding, but I'm unsure if the DVD Flick tool has that option.

This forum is not only for GW related problems. It's for any technical problem, but you're more likely to get an answer if the question is computer related (as opposed to say, automotive related.

I took a quick look at this. Looks nice. Didn't download the menu-making utility. Can you control button placement, menu nesting, etc?

I've never been a huge fan of QuEnc, but it's free. TMPGEnc costs money.
But, you got me thinking, and a bit of googling lead me to Avanti. Looks like a ffmpeg frontend with all the options you'd ever want.

Yes, you can. I don't know how menu features compare to DVDAuthorGUI to be honest. Both GUIs use dvdauthor, but I just preferred GUI for dvdauthor's interface. It was easier for me to learn at the time.

Avanti looks nice. I'll have to check it out.
