The main thing that will influence your ping (ms) is you connection. Whether you have dial-up, DSL, cable, etc., and the quality of the service you get will be a large factor.
Beyond that:
- the route that your packets have to travel to get back and forth to the GW server can affect ping. There could be a slow router/hub or a temporary re-route. These things often clear themselves up after a while.
- the quality of you Network Adapter (NIC). If it's a newer on-board NIC, that's usually not a problem, but older PCI NICs can have bad connections or old slow hardware.
- drivers - make sure your chipset/network drivers are up-to-date.
- if your graphics adapter is not up to the task - like if your fps is low (your graphics are choppy), that can have an effect on ping. If you are getting less than 30 frames per second (fps), try backing down the graphics level.
