Can Guild Wars run on a computer with a internet safety item?
Hey,i finally joined the Guru after 3 years of just using it for research :P
Anyway,I had a question about running Guild Wars I have been playing since 07 and never had a problem with GW playing on my computer,until recently. Long story short,me and my dad(im 16 :P) discovered my younger brother was looking at stuff he shouldnt be so my dad bought an internet safety browser called Safe Eyes. We only have it for him,as in we have the limits set to his age level and everything. Unfortunately,now neither I or my dad can play Guild Wars on our separate accounts(we dont have safe eyes set up for us). After playing for a random amount of time LESS than 1 hour,the game disconnects and freezes. No matter what this happens. We have had no softare changes since we got GW in 07(yea we're behind on the times :P) but my friend on GW,whose quite tech savvy seems to belive it might be our graphics card,but as i said we havent changed it all. We also noticed it might be because of the browser we have set up for my brother. I say this because the problems started at the same time we installed Safe Eyes for him. We dont want to uninstall it because well,as i said my brother wasnt really using the internet for the "right purposes" but we gotta have our GW fix :P So have there been any similar problems that any of you have experianced? Any help appreciated! From me and my dad thanks |

It may be just co-incidence that your problems showed up after Safe Eyes. It does sound more like your graphics card (and/or CPU) is overheating. Open up the computer, clean all the dust out of it, and make sure all fans are running.
In order to eliminate Safe Eyes as the culprit, you could un-install it temporarily and see if the lock-ups still occur. |

Ah thank you,I'm uh,not very knowledgeable about computers,so,how exactly would i clean it out? I know where the power button is located and thats about it :P

I'm assuming you're using a desktop otherwise you'll need to google instructions for your laptop manual. Either way ask your dad before doing this.
Basically you need a phillips head screwdriver and a paper towel or, even better a can of compressed air. First look on the back of your computer. You'll see two screws on one side of the case. By removing these screws you can remove the side panel of your computer and see the innards. Use your towel or air can to clean all fans and dirt you can see. Be careful not to push anything too hard as if you post saying that you broke something I'll probably just chuckle and shrug. After cleaning, replace the panel. That's the broad strokes of it. It's pretty simple. If your PC comes from some manufacturers it can be trickier to remove the side panel. Usually there is a lever our something. Just be careful and use commonsense. Good luck! Edit: it will be dirty btw. So make sure you aren't doing this on white carpet or anything. |

There are also some computer stores that offer this as a service for free or very low cost. They were doing it in my old PC store at least

Firstly is it only gw this happens to - have you tried another game or games for similar results.The safe eyes program ive never used but im sure that either temp uninstall and test or try to disable it temp and see what happens or even both.
In theory gw shouldnt be affected or if the case it was then usually the first problem would be Safe eyes blocking it and being unable to get a login screen , gw wouldnt connect - its what i call a block program and blocks sites usually in internet explorer etc. |

Buy a can of compressed air - WalMart sells them for <$5 --- do not use a paper towel as there is a risk of static discharge, esp. if you don't know what you are doing. In fact, before touching anything inside the computer, be sure to ground yourself by touching a metal part of the case first. Also, before doing anything make sure the PC is OFF and UNPLUGGED.

If you haven't cleaned the computer in three years, it will be dirty inside. They contain fans to circulate air through the computer case, plus a fan on your CPU chip on the mother board. Some graphics cards have their own fan. As said, be very careful about static, as it can fry things in your computer.
While you have the computer open, before you start to clean, plug it in and turn it on to check if all the fans are working. A non-functioning fan can be easily and cheaply replaced and might as well be done before you spend time cleaning a broken one. DO NOT use a vacuum on your computer. Use cans of compressed air to blow dust away; remember they are cheaper than a new computer. If none of that helps, it is possible that your graphics card is just dying. |
