[GUIDE] PERMANENT fix for "unrecoverable driver error"
one of the biggest complaint about my original fix for this problem is that it involved a 3rd party application (3danalyzer), and it more or less prevented the use of mods like texmod and commandline switches (-perf, -mute, etc). there's also reports that 3danalyzer won't work for some people, which i wasn't able to resolve. well, i've found a way around these issues.
for my original guide, click here:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10323347
credit goes to the creators of "obse_readme.txt", the readme for Oblivion Script Extender, and 3danalyzer. without their programs, i would've never been able to create this fix
NOTE: this fix is provided "as is", and i take no responsibility if it causes your computer to blow up (or otherwise break) in any way.
NOTE: this fix applies for GMA 3100 and GMA 500 (found in netbooks). it might support older GMAs, like the 815/855/865 series, but i cannot guarantee it. GMA 915/950 and GMA X3000/X3100/X4500 do not need this fix.
system specs:
dell optiplex 755
intel core2duo E8200 @2.66ghz
3gb RAM
intel Q35 express chipset
intel GMA3100 w/ 384mb
screenshot without this fix (and ingame settings):
yep, the broken sky textures, funky clouds, and bad fire effects are back. and as expected, the game crashed as soon as i zoned into rata sum.
the fix:
http://www.filefront.com/14759939/UDE_fix.zip
OR:
http://svx.pl/~drakun/gw/UDE_fix.zip
download the attached zip file and unzip the contents into your guild wars installation folder(this is "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars" by default). then, run GW.exe (or its shortcut) as usual.
note: if you are running vista or windows 7, do NOT put the files in the Guild Wars folder in My Documents. the three files in that zip must be in the same folder where GW.exe is.
the results can already be seen:
here's me running around in rata sum. the performance is still crap, but that's expected for an intel GMA. at the very least, you'll be able to play the game in all its visual splendor, as long as you don't mind it running like a slideshow.
thanks for reading.

Reason: better installation instructions.

20 FPS ain't THAT bad.. I have to deal with like 18 in some areas of NF for some reason, dosen't bother me much. (Year 2006 Radeon x1600 256 MB)
Good fix though, it's probably as good as you'll get out of an Intel card though.

i wouldn't say this is the best intel GMAs can do though. GMA X4500 can manage geforce 8400M GS performance. isn't it hilarious that GW came out in '05, and it took intel until '08 (that is, three years) to release a graphic chip that can max it out?

I don't think Intel really had the intentions of having their graphics cards being on a gamer's platform, though. I think the 8400M GS is in the new Mac Mini and some tiny comps, would be nice to play GW on a micro formfactor but I'd be scared the thing would overheat and die.

the 8400M GS in my laptop seems to handle it just fine, so i'm pretty sure a desktop SFF pc will be ok too.
anyway, has anyone tried this mod, and how well did it work?

i'm glad it works for you. i was only able to test this on one computer, and i was afraid that it was specific only to that system.
btw, i need a better place to host this thing. filefront will delete every upload after a month if there's "not enough downloads" for that file. judging by how it's going, it will get dropped soon unless i renew it every month, which is rather tedious.

no, this would not make your laptop run cooler. this is a specific fix for a graphics issue for specific intel GMAs, and has nothing to do with temperatures.

Me it dosent seem to be working. when I go into Rata Sum.. it still bugs up. I think tis cause I'm doing it badly..
when I download your fix, there are 3 files: config_DX config_GL d3d9.dll... so I open d3d9.dll and then I do 'open with' and then 'select de programme from a list' and then in that list I choose Guildwars Game Client. Guildwars opens up when I do that and then I go on my character thats stuck in Rata Sum and he is still stuck
srry if what I'm doing is badly explained. for some reason.. when I reformated my comp. my computer became french (I speak french so its not that much of a prob) but anyways. could you also explain me how to turn my computers language to english?
thanks and I hope you get get my main unstuck.

no, just drop all three files into the GW folder, then run GW.exe as normal.

keep in mind that this fix only works for intel GMA 3100 or GMA 500. if you have something that's not those two IGPs, this fix probably won't work.
btw, did you start GW.exe, or still use d3d9.dll? you might also want to undo what you've done with the "open with..." command.

My card is a Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller.. damit.. I had this probleme before.. I had my couzin go on my account and get it unstuck from where he lives (wich is 3h away) and now hes gone for 9 months.. I also had a new grapic card that worked every where...but I reformated my comp and every thing just bugged up.. needed to get drivers for it.. and I downloaded some drivers.. my screen goes blank every time I put my card ever since does drivers... any chances you know why it did that? cause that would fix my probleme in Rata Sum. My bugged up card is a Radeon 9250

you might want to post this somewhere else, since it's now beyond the scope of this thread.

EDIT: i was able to drag the 3 files into the GW folder, but it didnt help at all
i hope there is a way i can get 3D analyzer to work..
Also, i would have replied to your old thread but it was closed. But when i try to select guild wars on the 3D analyzer it just brings and 2 pop ups and doesn't select guild wars. Would you know how to fix this?
Thanks a lot, ive been meaning to get some vabbian armor, but when i got to whenan terrace i got the same error from rata sum

do you have GMA 3100 or GMA 500? if so, it will work. if not, then this fix doesn't do anything, as i mentioned on the top.

this method might still work for you if you modify one of the files. but first, tell me the exact graphic chip you have. you can find this by running dxdiag (start, run, dxdiag) and go to the graphics tab.
