Hey do a clean install. It is always nice to clean out the old stuff and a reinstall of the OS is nice to do from time to time. I reimage my machine every 6 months.

unghh
All i was saying was it was rebooting after 5 mins of play for a few days when i got the game so i uninstalled sp2 and it worked fine, not one reboot. im probably wrong but for me i 'looks' like thats what fixed it. So i though ill pass this on incase anyone else has the same problem and hasnt tried that yet. No need to jump on my head with "you pc is the suck, sp owns all"
gotta admit you must be able to see why i though sp2 was making it reboot?

Didi you try resintalling guild wars after SP2? Also with the most current drivers/patches/dx9c etc etc.

I wish my restarting problem was so simple. Ok heres the rundown...
Windows XP pc (SP1)
added 512 PC3200
installed GW, played fine for a hours then resetted itself
swapped ram slots
played GW for a few hours again then resetted
did nothing, played GW for 30 minutes then resetted
Defragged, played GW fine for a few hours then resetted
did nothing, played GW for a hours, then it resetted.
REFORMATTED
Installed up to SP1
installed latest direct X and drivers
removed the old ram
Played GW for 12 noon to around 8:30pm, then it resetted itself
removed the new ram, replaced the old ram
played GW for 30 minutes or so then it resetted itself
As you can see not once has SP2 touched my system, explain that! Can I get a big WTF?!

The answer is simple; SP2 + GW does not reset your PC.
As someone else has already mentioned, GW was coded with SP2 and firewalls in-mind. These things should rarely, if ever, cause a serious issue such as BSOD or hard resetting.
The first thing that people should check in regards to resets is if their PC is overheating, followed by checking BIOS settings, then checking for spyware and viruses. Good luck.

Things like settings for RAM, or anything else that could cause a serious error.
Also check if your PC is set to shutdown if it reaches a certain temperature.

Sp2 does several things really well:
It keeps out a larger chunk of morons with too much free time and pr0gs.
It stabilizes XP if your preventative maintenance is SOUNDLY COMMON.
It helps with some cosmetic stuff and basic functionality for updates etc.
Sp2 does several other things even better:
Not only does it keep you safer than before from the "wild world" outside your ports, it also keeps you FROM IT. PC gamer ran a huge article about how SP2 can cause chaos with your gaming, making it nigh impossible to run a game with any certainty online. One example is me, I run a Quake III server at times. No matter WHO or WHAT LOCATION attempts to join my game, it simply does not exist in the server list. After uninstalling SP2, my games run fine.
You can also disable that god DAMN internet connection LAMEWALL manually, but, like the version of microsoft messenger that comes with XP (no matter how many times you close it, it runs again, so close it, delete the exe before it can again, and save yourself ram and anger from people who see you online but you never respond due to being unaware), it never truly turns off.
SP2 is a great update for people who live journal and read myspace all friggin day. For gamers, the value is questionable. I recommend you get a firewall, both physical and or software, and route all your games through one secure, open port to avoid the bullshit that SP2 invariable caused me...
Good thread

SOT, Quake III is how old? When Microsoft released SP2 they made it perfectly clear that it could mess up some functionality on software that doesn't have true developer support anymore. They even posted a huge list of specific applications and games which may have problems, many of them were even older Microsoft games.
However, many recent games have released patches for SP2, and games developed since the release of SP2 have been designed with SP2 in mind. Guild Wars is one of those games.
As for Windows Messenger there's an option in that application to stop it running when Windows starts up, and even then, you only need to run a simple Google search for the script to uninstall it (if you're too lazy to do it yourself.) The firewall is even easier to disable.
I think that too many people in this thread are simply venting.
Thank you.

Well if it helps you sleep better at night, I used Quake III as an example. All games I own did the same thing, post install of sp2. Pre, they didnt. So, yeah.
How is common sense venting?

All I can say is, it must be your system. I and hordes of others refuse to live without SP2 now.

every single windows service pack and update will change settings. i mean that is why the put them out. the only thing i noticed is that i had to close ports and disable services that the service pack for some reason opened up again.

Only beef I've had with SP2 is the Dr. Watson bug detector acting up. Yes it is a part of Windows. I'm pretty sure it's just due to some buggy software on my machine. Not so much as a virus, spyware, or ad-ware. Just a bug. Dr. Watson detects small things and freezes your computer in a desperate attempt to stop it from doing something. Read up about it in FAQs, it is easily disabled.
Other then that, I put SP2 on every machine that I format for family and friends. No one has any problems with it.
