Pathfinding Problem
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. If it is, please move it
Anyways, I'm posting this to see if it's just me who experiences this problem or not. So far it's my biggest gripe in the game, and it has nothing to do with NPC/Henchmen movement AI, but player movement.
I seem to have a HUGE problem with "sticking" to a spot. What will happen is I'll walk past a rock, wall, tree, npc (die Gwen die! LOL) etc and will take a few steps b4 being warped back to where I was... just to keep on warping back if I keep on trying to walk the same way. The only way to stop from walking is to go back the way I came and try and walk right around the object.
This of course HAS gotten me killed on a number of times as I got "stuck" warping while trying to run away from something or run to something. Which of course annoys the hell out of me seeing as I then have to wonder all the way back to where I was to continue with what I was doing.
It can make moving around maps to be very, very frustrating. Especially when I'm trying to get somewhere or to/from something.. to go to go around a corner, around a rock, down/up a slop... just to get "stuck" on it and keep on bouncing back to where I was.. and only way to stop it is to move in another direction.. and sometimes even then I will still bounce back..
I know I'm only on dial-up. But b4 you say "laaaaggg!!!", I can have perfect connection and response and get "stuck". I know since I've been watching to try and see if it's lag and I don't believe it is. I've clicked on monsters and reacted instantaniously.. then click and get me "stuck" and stay stuck for minutes... click on something else behind me and respond straight away.. then get myself stuck again.. etc and so on. When I lag I tend to just walk slower or not move at all, not sticky to a spot.. I only sticky when walking too close to objects.
My only real grip with the game - was wondering if I'm the only person getting this or is it commonplace? Heh, I now try and avoid all rocks, tree's, walls, etc when walking because of this stupid bouncing stickyness I get.

Yeah dude it is a lag, I used to have those problems too. It has nothing to do with your dail up speed going perfectly, its just dial up. Dial up is a little to slow for this game in my oppion. I have wireless isp and I still think that is even to slow for this game, but I still play it.

This has happened to me before. It was a bug my game was experiencing. Just uninstall guildwars and reinstall it. Thats what fixed it for me.

Occasionally I'll see my character perfectly lined up with the bridge in Fort Koga or any other choke point.
Then suddenly swerve off to the left or right getting caught on an invisible wall.
What's worse is sometimes when I back up to try again, the same thing happens.
It tends not be a big deal in PvP, but God knows it's gotten me killed in PvE.

I would be happy if the pathfinding would make my char go around a pet when I click somewhere on the map or a mob when I want to attack.

What's just as annoying is "invisible walls." There's places that seemingly have a clear way and you get stopped as if there was something physically in front of you.

ive had some bad experiences with "lag" and "throw backs", i remeber in pre-searing it took me over 15 minutes to get over a bridge because half way over it id appear like 100 feet back where i came from... but my biggest problem with my guys movement is he has gone under briges a few times, i would be in a perfect line with them and just before i should be walking on it i go through it and i then get stuck, which was a real pain in the swamps.. but i guess that could just be "lag"
i have the same problem with baddys, they will look like there are right next to me, yet i wonder why they arent attacking me... then boom they are gone... its really bad when you click on something right next to you, and your guy runs in a totaly diffrent direction

Ahh, the joys of rubberbanding. It has more to to with the synchronising of the server and client out of wack. It really is something to do with how fast your connection is, the ping rate or something.

I've had that happen to me too! Click on a bear which is ahead of me. get a bit of lpause (lag) and then end up running to me left... problem being the bear was running to the right (thus away from me!). I stopped when I hit a rock and got "stuck".. pfft! (so got lagged, then moved wrong way just to end up on a bouncing rock .. LOL)
I've yet to fall through a bridge yet. Heh, only thing thats happened to me is being too close to the side-wall and starti ng the whole bounce-back routine.. LOL
Anarchist_Monk - As I said, I'm sure it's not lag or my dial-up. I can do this myself ANY time I want and have tested it when I had both good and bad lag, it happens either way.
salja Wachi - what is docing ??? sorry if I seem n00bish, but never heard of this term b4...
Hmm, guess I'll file a bug report.. heh, who knows.. might help :P

I had this problem with COX ISP and their horrible, horrible service.
This problem occurs when you have high lattency and packet loss. It doesn't matter if you have an average 500 MB/s connection or what have you.
If your ISP is crappy, every 1 minute or so, your internet trafic will be rerouted through a bad server. If this server doesn't respond, your connection will attempt to find another one, and another one. The result is what you see.
Information aren't being exchanged correctly, hence you jumped about.
Again none of these is related to your internet service. Your average can be 50 MB/s, but if ever 1 minute or so you get a speed of 1 kp/s, I say, dump your ISP.

It's not pathfinding, it's lag.
It sounds as if you're seeing the same things I occasionally do, and that's server lag, so it has little to do with your connection, and everything to do with server load.
FWIW, I have a non-shared 10Mbit full duplex connection, I have 1.3MByte/s sustained transfer - I simply don't get lag on my end, but I do get server lag.

Malchiel & Numa Pompilius - thank you for the replies. That could explain the stinking and bouncing to some extent. Though doesn't explain why a lot of the time I can "force" this to happen *shrugs* Maybe I just got a spotchy ISP. heh, who knows.
I've not had problems playing other online games tho, so I suspect it's either GW server side or for some stupid reason my ISP uses a crapola route to get to the GW server. I might just try a few traceroute's at various times in the day to see what my ping's are like through the route to GW (well, the GW website that is.. LOL).

The game definetaly has some path problems alright. My henchies got stuck in an loop once. I let them stay there to see how long it would take them to get out. After 6 hours I couldn't bother anymore. They still run forth an back getting nowhere. On the picture here my character refused to attack the charr no matter how many times i clicked on him. Cyclone attack thou still could hit him. I had to make my character move forward to the right then attack him, to get a normal hit. Should be possible to go straight forward. But it wasent.
Also if a friend/allied is between you and the target and you are jusr behind your friend, the path finder can not find the way around your friend. You will be stuck there.
