have you tried installing the copy of DirectX that comes on the Guild Wars Disks?
Prophecies had DX8
Factions has DX9.0c

Well you do exactly what hoppy was saying... I don't know why it wouldn't work. Are you sure that the DirectX installation completed successfully when you attempted to install it from the disc? Did you try installing it multiple times? Did you try installing from both your Prophecies and Factions disc unsuccessfully? Are you sure that your DirectX download installation worked/didn't work? Did you try the downloaded installtion multiple times?

Here, this is the link to the newest directx bundle, just released this month
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Save that. Then double-click it. It asks where you want to place the files, tell it c:\dx9 or something like that. When it is done, you must go to the folder you chose to unload the files into, and run DXSETUP.EXE. After that finishes, you reboot, and your game should play.
If you are wondering whether or not it worked, click Start, then click Run. Type dxdiag and hit enter. Right on the front page of the directx diagnostic, near the bottom, it tells you which version you have. If you did everything right, it should say:
directx version: directx 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

You're all missing it. I'd bet 10 bucks he didn't install his video card drivers.

Just a thought here but you have re-installed your video card drivers, from Nvidia or ATI, for which ever flavour of card you have installed haven't you? (Edited: Because Kvndoom posted it whist I was typing mine)
If you used the latest release when you installed your new hard drive then this may be a cause of your " unable to initialize 3D output" problem. Try reverting back to the release you were using before.
Also, click start and then run. Type dxdiag into the box and hit enter. Go through all the tests, DirectDraw, DirectSound etc. etc. and see what, if any, errors pop up. I'll take a stab in the dark here, if it's not your video drivers then I reckon the file d3d8.dll is either missing or got corrupted during the DirectX download/installation process.
Re-install the latest DirectX from another source! See if that fixes it.

New install of XP, eh? If you forgot to install DX9.0c, then chances are you missed either your video card drivers or your chipset drivers, or both. Do you have these installed?
