Endeavor000...I agree with you that it is on their end. So, it does not make sense to mess with your computer too much. I think that since we were all working and made no changes, we would be best off to leave our computers as much intact as we can so that when they do get their s*** together, we are not so out of sorts that we have new problems. Dad's corollary to Murphy's law comes into effect here:

If it ain't broke f*** with it til it is!

I have done minor things that I thought may help like resetting the tcp/ip stack, flushing the dns and reconfiguring my dialup account which did not help. I even renamed the gw.dat file and let it create a new one but that didn't work either. I think if it was your computer, you would be having trouble elsewhere.

I think that with the new factions stuff, they have introduced code or something which is keeping us out by conflicting with something we are running. Don't know what that is, but if it is on their end, and I believe it is, then we can do nothing from this end to fix it.

Default quick fix

OK I've been playing a game called Silk Road.. it looks/feels kinda like guild wars. I used guild wars terminology to make a small party and do quests. It's free and korean and 500 megs. pretty cool skill system. I havnt been having lag problems tho it takes abt 1/8 sec to respond to a clik.. not THAT annoying.
I use Athens server
my ign is thimme.
I think the addy is silkroadonline.net

Hi all:

I too am having this problem. I was able to play without issues untill the rollback, but once that was over I was back playing without problems. Today (march 21) I sat down to play and was down in Sorrows doing my thing with the henchies when I lagged out and now get the error 058.

There's no way its on my end. Anet is boned, plain and simple. Don't let anyone fool you otherwise.

ISP: Local small town telco (but DSL even so)
My system, windows xp, 1 mg ram, not much else that's significant because everything else works.

Given that I was in the middle of playing when this happened, I'd *love* to hear the explanation as to how its on my end.

One other thing - try to enter ANY password, you get the same error. Definately a problem with the authentication servers. Reminds me why I dislike online-only games. Not enough to quit of course, just why I dislike them

Same problem here. Has anyone tried using the PingPlotter utility? I was reading another forum about someone else having a problem like this. He posted his entire conversation with GW Tech Support. One thing they asked him to do was run PingPlotter just as a network diagnostic. I checked it out and it's a really neat little tool. One thing I've done is used it to trace routes to all the GW servers (I've gotten 100% packet loss on each of the log-in servers), then output the results to TXT and PNG files. I plan to zip them up and send them along with my request for support.

Also, here are my machine stats:
Windows XP Pro (32 bit), SP2
Shuttle SN25P
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
1 GB Patriot PC3200
ATI PCIe Radeon X600 AIW, 256 MB
Windows Firewall: OFF
nVidia Firewall: OFF
Spybot S&D: OFF
Linksys WRT54G Router (ports 80 and 6112 set correctly)
Charter cable modem (supposed to be 3 Mb connection, but that never happens )

Anything I left off? I'll be sending this along with my request.

P.S. Greetings, Lycan! I'm in Greenville, too.

I also had the code 58 und I could solve it. So I first delete guild wars from my system. Then I reinstall the game from the Internet. I downloaded the client and installed the game. Then I started it and it works. I don't know why but maybe it works if I install it from the client and not from the cd.

I hope I can help someone. Good luck!!

Sim, that sounds inspiring but for us poor players with dialup it would take forever to download all the files to get up and running again. If this works for more of the guys with dsl, then I guess it may be the only hope and I'll have to bite the bullet and do the same.

mathewthegreat, that's what my tracert looks like too. When it gets down toward the bottom, nothing but time outs. One bright note, I have been in contact with a member of this forum who says she is a tech support person at NCsoft and I gave her my incident number and she said she will look into it and see what can be done. I'll let you guys know as soon as I hear anything. Other than that, it has been pretty much more of the same on this end.

Me again.

I'm still engaged with tech support. After leaving it overnight, still no go, error 058. Came home after lunch and didn't do a single thing - logs in just fine without nary a hitch.

I ran the tool per tech support's request and will send them the file, but frankly it doesn't show much of anything other than I can get to the servers. Still doesn't explain the outtage. It's gotta be something pretty damn big to cause an outtage I'd think. It's not like Anet is running the auth. servers on a single box with a 256 dsl line, is it?

Ok. I just got an email from a senior tech and he said that I should uninstall my virus checker (NOD32), uninstall the game, reinstall the game and try it. He said that while playing the game, you do not need to run a virus checker unless you are also surfing the internet. Does this sound right to you guys? I am willing to try anything at this point.

Also, he said that after installing the game, which only takes me about an hour with dialup, the rest of the twenty trillion bytes will download as I play, hence the lightning bolt thing. I am skeptical as we were having huge downloads prior to not being able to get on. We would go out of an area and into a new area and have a 20 minute download. We would leave a town and then go back into the same town and have a 20 minute download. I know that some others expressed the same situation.

I'm at work now so after I get home in about 6 hours, I will do what he says and then get back to you guys with the results. I know that Sim (above) had success with reinstalling so maybe.......it's better than getting poked in the eye with a sharp stick anyhow.

I have NOD32 and able to play w/ it running. I had NOD32 installed on the system 1st then added GW latter but I do have unusually long decompression (nothing that bad) time to time so I wonder if NOD32 cause's some issues. I also have it running while playing.

EternalTempest, Yeah, I don't know. I have terminated the process in task manager and it made no difference. Plus, I was able to play with it running before too. It seems to me that if you terminate the process, it is not running and should not come into play.

I guess that uninstalling and reinstalling makes sense and shouldn't be too bad for dsl users but I just don't know how it will go with dial up. I think it will be a long process but one I am willing to take if it works. I am only gonna do it on one machine first and then if it works, the other.

I have a sinking feeling, in your case it is a corupted file in the GW.dat file which un-installing and re-installing would fix but that will take a long time, they added 400 mb for faction code recently to. I've had this happen to me and only way to fix it was remove it but in my case it was a bad update (download) that took. I'd be willing (if you send me a blank dvd-/+R in a SASE I would burn the gw.dat file and send it to you.

Ok, I called my wife and had her uninstall NOD32 and she did and then she was able to get on GW...but...it is now so choppy that she was not able to play. She went outside the town and was only able to stand there as she got slaughtered by the baddies. So, that is with NOD32 completely removed and only part (although a big one) of the problem solved.

So...I am now wondering about that corrupt gw.dat file. My kid lives down the road and he could burn his gw.dat onto a dvd for me but thanks EternalTempest.

I am really blown away by this. Our game was running very well with NOD32 installed and operating so I can't figure this out. I see that IMON has some place for exceptions to scanning and I had my honey make an exception for gw.exe on her machine (still has NOD32) and it would not start.

I don't want to change virus scanners (still a lot left on my subscriptions) so I will check with eset and see if there is something that can be tweaked.
