Default Would this be a viable build?

I haven't played this game yet nor really know how like things work with it. but yeah the build i'm talking about would be a warrior/monk build... to me it just seems a little odd but at the same time it mite be cool because u'd be strong but be able to heal urself a bit too? what do you all think?

oh and sorry if this was already mentioned

Of course every build no matter can and is viable. However there are plenty different ways to play a War/Mnk. I don't play it, but at the builds directory of this site I'm sure there are quite a few.

Well I find them almost impossible to kill,(I'm a R/Me) first of all Warriors themselves are bad enough, but being able to heal...I just run away at first sight of a W/Mo. Unless I'm higher level then they are of course.

The W/Mo is pretty common, I'd try something different that's a little more interesting then:
Attack!
Heal!
Attack!
Heal!
Attack!
Heal!

Hehe, I hope you won't be disappointed. Warrior/monk is one of the most overused combinations in the game. Most of the time they're overrated, though. They can be good at lower level arenas, or the random gladiator's arena, but a good experienced team can wipe out wa/mos with no problem.. It entirely depends on what you want to do with it.. and what skills you need.

For example.. in highly competitive areas.. it's both a waste of energy and a waste of time healing yourself when a monk in your team can do it much better. Solo, it would be nice.. but a great part of this game revolves around teams. And hence, a role for each person. However, I do -love- wa/mos who carry resurrection so that I don't have to res. If I stop healing in order to revive someone, in spending those 8 seconds using restore life, most often, someone else would die.

Also don't get stuck with the same mindset like in other rpg games where when you pick a class "your supposed to play it that way." Like War/Mnks don't all do the attack, heal self combo. Although I believe majority do it that way though. If you research a bit you could create a War/Mnk that plays entirely unique.

Question

ya, im kind of a nooblet to GW too. Like i read alot, but I only played for 2 hours on the last BWE. I have a Ranger/Monk, but when the wipe comes, wut should I put as my secondary class if I want some spells which will amplify a more beastmastery type ranger?

Well, most of the pet buffs are in the ranger skillset. You can always stay monk as a support/healer for your pet (I'm assuming that you'll be using your pet as the primary damage dealer). Without points in both expertise AND marksmanship, rangers don't do optimum damage with bows. So, if you're going to focus entirely on beastmastery, the pet will -have- to be your damage source. In addition, choosing necro would give you undead minions.. but I highly doubt that raised minions benefit from pet buffs. The minions also die after a set amount of time.

With that said.. the way that the game is set up currently, a beastmaster build is.. well.. not very effective. You can always do it, of course, if that's your one great wish in GW, but I wouldn't hope to be very effective in PvP.

But you never know, you might surprise all of us. Go for what you want to do, and don't worry about having an elite, dazzling character that no one will ever come close to. There is no such thing in GW. Have fun.

P.S. Remember that monk res doesn't work on pets. You need the pet res skills in order to revive your furry/feathered companions.

Question

ya, umm i like being a beastmaster dude, but i also have major marksmanship. I will be playing with friends alot, so i do not want monk secondary, my friends can heal me. I am a ranger that will be shooting and beastmastering; not setting traps and preparing for battle (sounds boring to me, but who knows?). What would be a kind of fun secondary class with a variety of skills (except for elementalist) that can boost my character?

The whole thing, I think, behind the second profession thing is to give someone the chance to go beyond the stock "Warrior Smash! Monk Heal! Thief steals Gold! Wizard has shot the food! Player cannot hurt other player--yet!" thing many people associate with fantasy games with pre-defined careers (which is more or less all of them). If you can be a Warrior who knows some feild medicine, or a monk who can whip up some mesmer illusions, or a ranger with a knack for manipulating the elements, then you have more in the game that's open to you, and different ways to participate in the scene that's happening now.

There is no "best". Everything is (supposed to be) balanced enough to where any two is as good or as bad as any other two. Each has plusses and minuses, which add up to a challenge, hopefully one that will keep you coming back for years to come. All I can say is experiment. with the level 20 cap, it won't be the end of the world to flush a character and start over, in some ways it might be better to do so. ^_^

Well, to be purely honest.. marksmanship will not be as effective without the accompanying stats in expertise. Rangers don't have that much energy to begin with, and marksmanship skills for the most part use energy. Expertise cuts down tremendously on that energy cost. Also remember that pet buffs take quite a bit of space on your skill bar..

As for a secondary profession, ele is a common choice because of the conjure element spells. Like Dave said, though, there is no best secondary class. Especially if you're looking for a "fun secondary class." No one else can define "fun" for you except yourself.. so just pick what you like the most, and go with it!

Question

ya. But still, has anyone found like a supa-fun secondary class?!?! I just want to have fun with the game, not compete alot. I want a fun, yet successful build, not a boring build that is defined. At least, a build that is defined to one sort of thing, like a monk/mesmer, your just healing, thats it. I want something with a variety of skills, being a ranger, what is a fun secondary?

If you have that type of mentality, no profession combination will be fun for you, as you're hedged into a preconceived notion of what that combination should do.

I, for one, can think of a wide array of things for a monk/mesmer to do besides healing. Without even mentioning a protection build, you can basically do whatever you want with the monk/mesmer. You can be a smiting monk, of course -- scourge healing is always fun. Or, why not make a build using a monk primary based around a mesmer skill? It doesn't matter if it doesn't work. Just find something else you want to try out.

Freyas in particular has many very well-thought articles on builds revolved around unusual skills.

A wa/mo (the most overused combination in the game) can be innovative, unusual, and fun.. you just have to be creative enough, and assertive enough to find it. Again, no one else can define "fun" for you.. so unless you want people to analyze the effectiveness of a particular build you made for a specific, focused purpose, it's all a matter of personal preference.

All the secondaries are fun, you just need to decide what your role will be.

Ranger can do many things.

Look, I'm not you. I don't know what you like. If you want to really know, try it out and see what you like.

1st off this is not a build, this is just two proffesions, but if you have the right build then w/mo are the most annoying thing i ever come by. im a w/mes (very fun you should try it) and when ever i come up against a w/mo it takes like 5 min to win (but luckly i have backfire) you should look at some of the builds here they are good, and the secondary you choose really depends on what you wants to do

mes-take out casters

monk-stay alive forever

warrior-kill preety much everything

ranger- not to sure on this one

necro- make theyre health drop very fast while you attack them

ele- high dmg dealer (with right build)

these are mainly my oppinions, but try everything untill you find what you like

lol... Ok I'll tell you the build I got to do so far even though fairly early, but "FUN" for me.

Necromancer/Ranger

putting points into mainly deathmagic and soul reaping and then beast mastery.

Skills (don't have all the ones i need but using the ones I currently have)
but mainly focus on raising minions and using corpses and maintaining them to last long as your wall and having a pet beside you to aggro when you have no minions and your party kills and you begin to make an army. So far thats really fun for me in PvE and effective against dumb mobs because they tend to go for my wall of minions.

Now I don't care hardly if its ineffective because I'll make it effective using by anymeans tactics and ways to use my minions as a wall and what not.

-It's not the build that makes it good, it's how you use it-

ahem don't mind me I'm really sleepy I'm heading off to bed...
