Endless Waltz
I know its a Gundam movie title, but I just like the name.
onto the topic So I'm not quiet a hardcore gamer, but I'm not really a casual either, I'm sorta in between on the lower part of the hardcore I guess. Anyway I'm thinking of checking out GW. Now I've really enjoyed the hardcore games like EQ and FFXI, and spent many, many, many... many hours/days/weeks/months leveling characters. I'm currently playing WoW at the moment (like many people :P) but am not too impressed anymore. Don't get me wrong I thought the game was the greatest thing I ever played in beta and pre-lvl 40. But things started to slow down 40+ everything seemed repetitive. And the graphics I thought were a nice change are now just starting to get annoying. So my main question is; Is this a game for a hardcore gamer? I've read the lvl cap is only 20... that sorta worries me. Is this something I've going to pick up and put back down in a couple months? :coughWoWcough: - I still havn't been able to cap my main, hes still in his late 50's, it just seems like a chore now. The game looks great, and I like all the concepts, but how long is it? and how much is the replay value worth? Not only that hows the pvp? Is that going to be repetitive too after awhile? Am I too resume my search for a new MMORPG-or even give them up until vangaurd comes out O.O ??? Aslo can anyone post or refer me to a character design screenie? example - Example of what I'm looking for, only GW plz Thanks for any feed back ~Cheers Edit - Grammer and spelling >< Last edited by Vivid; Apr 07, 2005 at 05:30 AM // 05:30.. |

I didn't mean to sound rude. I just thought that promting you to venture over to the other forum would be a rewarding experience... that would save me thinking and typing too much.

Spend $5 on a pre-order and try it at the next beta weekend yourself. If you like it, the $5 is worth the 3 days. If you don't like it, it's $45 saved from buying the actual game.

#1 - Forget everything you have been programmed to expect from an MMO.
#2 - Consider a game where the level cap is relatively easy to hit but after doing so the entire rest of the game is designed to be challenging for that level and you can access anyplace without the need to to keep leveling. #3 - Imagine a world where the decisions you make in PvE or PvP are more important than what level your character is. #4 - Imagine a world where 99% of the players are relatively balanced when facing one another. You now have a glimpse into the new face of online gaming that is Guild Wars. - Iczer |

If you mean hardcore in the regular MMORPG sense, grinding for items that'll allow you to beat anything in your path & levels, then: no. If you mean hardcore in a competitive (like in FPS-communities) sense, improving your personal/team's skills & tactics through training to beat your opponents in involving PvP combat, then: yes. I'm a FPS gamer, I never liked games that determine your chance to win based on time spent playing or the way a dice rolls, I like skill to determine the winner, not luck or stats. To me, Guild Wars is about as hardcore as it gets, allowing me to spend however much time I want on practicing my skills (e.g.: dodging attacks manually!) or team-tactics (e.g.: unique, never-used-before, builds). To others it might be as casual as it gets, allowing them to do a quick 10 minute arena-match during their break off from work. Quote:
In MMORPG's such as WoW, virtually all of the content is designed for people below the levelcap, that's not the case in Guild Wars. In Guild Wars, the short amount of time you spend leveling is ment as an introduction to the game, only after you attain level 20 (which you'll attain much quicker than in WoW) does the majority of the content open up to you. There's around 25 missions planned for the initial release, my guestimate is that you'll be level 20 around halfway through that (or slightly later). Not counting any exploration zone or PvP experience you might gain on the way. As to wether you'll drop it in a couple of months, that depends on where your interests lie. If you're interested in PvP (in more of a FPS-manner than you're probaply used to from Online RPG's: tactics & individual skill come into play and matches are for a limited numbers of people with clear objectives) then it can last as long as you want it to, it's like playing a FPS as a member (or leader) of a clan: every single match brings you something new and the competition will push you into playing for a long time to come. If you're interested in PvE, then I don't really know. I've heard a lot has changed involving PvE - last time I played was in the 3rd BWE, if PvE is still like that then it might last for a couple of months, probaply longer than WoW because there's more choices for you to make. Every single class-combination can be played in a number of ways (e.g.: a Warrior/Monk's style of play will change quite dramatically, just by changing it's weapon from a sword & shield to a hammer) and there's a total of around 30 class-combinations, that's a load of ways to play the game! So far, I've spent around 200 hours playing Guild Wars in all (participated in the E3 Open Alpha, World Preview Event, and the first 3 Beta Weekend Events) and I can't see GW losing my interest many hours to come. Every single mode of play just is too addictive I could spent at least another 200 hours just on playing PvP in the Tombs, with all the varieing maps and strategies and teams, the fun just doesn't seem to end. I spent an entire weekend on just GvG's (back when there was only 1 map and only 1 type of guild hall) - and it didn't get boring at all, my entire guild was just hungry for the next BWE so we could continue the GvG, instead we ended up Tombing pretty much the entire event ;p Quote:

There are so many different possibilities, there's always something new to try. I don't see the PvP getting repetitive until long after the second chapter is released - especially now that there are a load of new features for the GvG matches.
