I'm using a warrior/monk build. Should I build a sword or hammer warrior?

It's a matter of your choice.

If you like high speed low damage better protection( I.E- Shield ), choose sword.

If you want slow, solid damage but lower armour( without shield, since hammers are 2 handed), choose hammer.

Axes do medium damage, medium speed, and you can use a shield with it.
