What GW's doesn't have is an open adventuring area (yes, I'm stating the obvious). Because of that you lose the potential for randomly running across another party. That has its good points and bad points. You never have to camp, or wait around for things to spawn, or deal with level 50 characters farming the Named level 10 mob you need to kill in order to complete a quest. I also like that in GW I can tell a friend about it, he can buy it, start playing and we can join up. No worries about "What server do I pick?" I gave an attempt to play WOW. It was beautiful, I liked it. I didnt like the fact that the AI wasnt smart enough to turn me around as the thing I was fighting walked around behind me ?! The whole "You are not facing the right way" was annoying as hell. Sure, I just shifted around but still - Even Ultima Online had AI smart enough to auto turn me, and that game is nearing 10 years old.
What I couldnt do with WOW - is its segregation. If I wanted to play with my friends, I basically had to pick and play whatever they had already choosen. If they picked Hoard, I was stuck. I couldnt even make the opposite "group" on the same server.. and if I didnt play their faction - I litterally could not play with them at all. With Guild Wars - its completely different. It doesnt matter what I am, at any time I can play with any of my friends with the simple click of a button to switch districts. As for private maps - I like it. I enjoy not dealing with PKs, Campers, ect... Its nice. I do, however, wish they allowed for large party's. |

Actually...

But what everyone should realise about this is that NCSOFT, ARENANET and every single person who has anything to do with the development of this game all agree in calling it an 'MMO', as they advertise so despite what the official definition of an MMO actually is, the argument needs to be taken to them. Because if they are calling it something which it is not.. regardless of if its better than WoW or not, there is something in our country call 'Trading Standards'.. which makes advertising a product as something that it is not as flat illegal. And to be honest, I dont want people to buy GW who expect an MMO then get disapointed, then slag it off... I would rather not people in our community who feel thay have been deceived. Its true.. its not the same kind of Multiplayer game that WoW or CoH is, and I would rather people who prefer that type of game to STAY AWAY, so we dont have to listen their constant moaning. as for WoW Vs GW: GW is a game of skill, every 'real mmo' (for want of a better term), that I have played doesnt even come close to requiring skill.. they simply require lots of time and aquiring knowledge of the game, because its easy its fun.. So for those who feel they dont like GW its probably because they dont like the idea of playing something that isnt easy!.. just like the difference between someone who likes to play drafts to someone who prefers to play chess... GW is the CHESS of MMO's, WoW is the Drafts.... both are fun to different kinds of mentality. The Snowman. |

IMO, these two games are completely different animals. I like both equally well, even though at the moment I'm a bit burned out from WoW.
From what I've gathered, WoW is engineered toward end-game rewards for the power gamer. Yes, they say they keep the casual gamer in mind, and they truly do...up until you reach lvl 60 and want gear better than green. End-game right now is built completely around a player base that has hours upon hours to spend on hard-core gaming. The only chance you have of getting the best gear is to take part in instances that take anywhere from 2 hours to 6 days to complete. They are long, drawn out, and offer little reward for the effort you need to put in. Plus, there are only like 5 instance/encounters right now, so you have to do the same ones over and over and over again in the slim hopes that you MIGHT find an epic or a class set piece drop. End-game is designed to foster selfish play over the best gear. There is no other purpose or impact of end-game in WoW than enticing players to get the best gear for themselves. PvP is designed the same way. There are no global faction rewards for engaging in PvP. Their PvP model rewards players with ranks and high level PvP gear. It's the same thing as instances/encounters, because the only goal is for players to get the best gear for themselves. GW, on the other hands, focuses more (IMO) on cooperative end-game play. I haven't come close to reaching lvl 20 yet, but I'm sure that not only are there missions there for PvE, but the goal is go battle Guild vs. Guild. Victories and defeats are felt (and heard) throughout the entire realm, and victories and defeats also impact the world as a whole. While structured significantly differently, I like both games for different reasons. It's really a matter of play style. |

MMORPG's (Wow) VS. GUILD WARS
Hey Group,
First let me say I am not the average user of a forum like this. Most are between 17 - 24, have tons of freetime to spend on games, and somehow an unlimited supply of money to spend on games. I on the other hand am a strugglying author of 26 years of age, with a wife and twi children. I don't have but perhaps, 10 - 15 hours a week to play a game. I've played the typical 15 dollars a month level grind games, some I've enjoyed others I did not. I beta tested and played "The Sims Online" and "Earth and Beyond", and most recently gave up my lvl 50's on City of Heroes. I play guildwars and it's totally different! Do I consider it a MMORPG? Sure I do. It's thousands of players, (on different instances, or servers), playing in a world. It's not a persistant world, but there has never been a true persistant world in any game play. (where bosses would really die, if I knocked down a tree it would stay down, etc etc.) I LOVE the differences. I love that I can find any player in the game, and I dont have to PAY to switch servers. I love that there are only 20 lvls! Most MMORPG's you have to pick a profession and never turn back on anything else. I love the fact that noone will be selling lvl 20's, because it aint that hard to get there. I love the fact that you can build a real STRATEGY about the missions and no other punk can come bother you, and I love that you can warp from city to city without having to walk and kill hundreds of lower lvl mobs to get home. I love that I am having fun discovering new things, and the zones are hidden-like, not just go south to get to Zone B for lvls 2 - 8. I found Yak's Bend last night without a map, without a huge sign, but by EXPLORING. That's another thing. No huge penalty for EXPLORING. You die? O well, you get back up and get your ass some better armor before taking on three lvl 10 Hydras. Of course, I am still working on the mystery of fur, but I LOVE that too. I do hope they incorporate SOME other MMORPG things, and maybe they will. It would be nice to have larger groups for some of the game, where several groups of 6 attack a larger boss or group of mobs. I also would like some UBER items, but have them be REALLY persistant. Like have only ONE "Sword of ______" and that way it would be really special to have. WHo knows. So I love it, and I love no monthly fee, cause im friggin broke. SO when an expansion comes out, I can buy it right away, or wait. If that happens 5 times a year, GREAT, Im cool. BUt IM in for the long haul. So if someone knows where the FUR is, let me know! |

These threads always devolve into flaming and pointlessness. Guild Wars is Guild Wars, WoW is WoW. Odd as it may be they can coexist in the same universe. Each can be good in their own way and that takes nothing away from the other.
