World of Warcraft (WoW) vs. Guild Wars
I have been playing WoW for some time now, about half a year, and currently have a 56 paladin amoung other characters. I was wondering if anyone else has played WoW and knows how that game would compare to Guild Wars - if it's better or worse. Any on-hands experience would be helpfull in me choosing a game to play.

Uh-oh, he just opened a can of worms.
Look around the forum a bit, I'm sure you'll find something that argues this same topic. |

I have the CE of both games - I got WoW 2 days after it came out - and I got GW last night.
So far, I've been very disappointed with GW. I understand that in games of this type, it takes a long time to get into them, etc. - but things don't look very good so far. I'm willing to give it time. As for the peeps in this thread claiming the games shouldn't even be compared - well, blame that on the advertising for GW. They've spent quite a bit of time linking the games themselves, so the comparisons are not only natural - they're expected. This could be a major problem for GW, though - because in a direct comparison with WoW, I don't see it faring very well. Of course, this is only my opinion after only an hour of play. I really hope it gets better - and they change some of the model around - b/c I plunked out $80 for this puppy. |

The "O" shouldn't be in there - unless it means "On-line". In that case, it's in the wrong spot. You get the point. |

Remember that Anet just made up the CORPG tag, this game is still a MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online).
I can compair the two. One is good the other is not, you figure out wich one I like |

There is nothing massive about GW. You have at most 16 people outside of towns, and 50 in towns. If anything it's just a MORPG like Diablo 2 on Bnet was, but Anet is trying to come up with their own terms to advertise the game. CORPG stands for Competitive Online Role-Playing Game.

you can't totally say that these games can't compare, because they really can. I devoted a lot of time to wow, way too much time. If you like long level grinds stick with wow. If you like running for a half hour to get to a destination and find out your party has disbanded this is your game. IF you enjoy feeling that you need to play a game because you're dishing out 15$ a month than have fun. I think the beauty of GW is that not every Warrior, Necro, etc is the same. This isn't the case for wow. Besides the little difference the talent trees make, each paladin, shaman, etc will always basically be the same. With GW it takes time to construct a build, tweak and master it. While raids are fun, they get tiring. i know the honor system was just added and i wish i stayed long enough to work with it, but i'm sure it didn't change things much. I don't know how long GW will keep me occupied based on the fact that getting to level 20 can take much less than a week, but i'd rather be max level in a week than waste 2 months on the same character.
There's a lot of potential in this game that i don't see in wow. |

For PvP you can have 8 vs.8, I would not call that massive, would you? This is very much like D2, but instead of lobbies we have towns. |

I think they really screwed up by implying that GW is a MMORPG. People come to expect massive worlds and large amounts of people when they see think of a MMORPG. When it's not there, it's pretty disheartening. I realize they've been calling this a CORPG, but they want people to think of it as a MMORPG. They're advertising and word-of-mouth campaign has been aimed at drawing comparisons to WoW as well as setting this game up as a MMORPG without a fee. Well, like the previous guy said, if you really think about it - using the loose definitions the GW team is, Diablo 2 is a MMORPG. Sure, in GW there are about 50 people in a town instead of 8 - but that's not a big difference. Surely not as different as the 100's and 1000's people expect when you use acronyms like MMORPG. GW boils down to a 3D Diablo with a few more people available in towns. That's not necessarily a bad thing - don't get me wrong - but it's no MMORPG. Some of the best times I've had on-line in MMORPG's have come from situations that are technically impossible in Guild Wars - and I think that's what mainly bothers me. It's been a bit of a "bait & switch" advertising campaign - and I think it's going to come back and bite them. People expecting a MMORPG without fees are going to be pissed - and just by looking at the box advertising along, the language used on the Guild Wars box is nearly identical to that of the WoW box, the Everquest 2 box, and the SWG box - except for the "no monthly fees!!" bit. They want people to think it's a MMORPG. Most people don't play in betas or read every article they can find about a game. Every game has it's hardcore fanboy audience, but it thrives or fails on the word-of-mouth and casual customer audience - and that's the audience that is going to be misled and turned-off by this. |

Hmmm, World of GankCraft versus a balanced PvP model = GW 4TW!!!!!! This is not a mindless grindfest ala WoW, in GW you enjoy pVe then it's all about competition in GVG, PvP or whatever. I predict thta a alot of he WoW Gankers will ry GW and hate it. Why? Cuz they cant grief in GW. When mos of these losers realize tha ganking does not exist here they will go back to WoW or some other MMo. |

O really Id like to think that a town (kind of like the ones in D2) allow more than 8, then agin i might just be losing it. Towns are in-game there for not "lobbys". In this game you have the opertunity to meet everyone in-game not leave like you have to in D2 |
