Default What's the point of Role-playing Characters?

Can't PvP characters join guilds and compete in tournaments and such? So what is the point of Roleplaying characters? Just to unlock more skills?

Actually I think the point of Guild Wars is the tournaments. It is called "Guild" Wars afterall.

Exactly.

People have different opinions on what they want from the game..if you want to do quests, join a guild and follow the storyline make an rp character.

If you only want to do pvp, they have given you the option to do so without training. (Although I would recommend using an rp character first to unlock some of the items.)

One could just as easily say, "What's the point of PvP?".

The point of RP is pretty clear. You build your character up, do the many missions and quests available, and fight PvE and/or PvP. There are many different zones to check out which you cannot do in PvP, many tough missions and bosses, let alone unlocking skills and upgrades for PvP characters.

90% of the game or so is RP zones(physical space). You play through the game just like any other RPG game.

But I mean come on, the level cap is only 20, the amount of item selection pales in comparison to WoW and EQ2 and any number of other games. Heck, you can only wear 5 pieces of armor, only use 8 skills at a time whereas in WoW you can use litterally 30 skills in the same battle.

What this game lacks in scope, it gains in an awesome PvP and GuildvGuild system. This is undeniably the only strength of the game, and if you think the PvE in this game is anything, I would suggest you check out WoW, EQ2, or basically any other MMO. Heck even DAOC had more PvE than this and they did nothing to hide the fact that their game was more PvP than PvE centric.

GW is ALL about the PvP, which is great because their PvE game has much to be desired.

To just play PvP, one has to use either the predesigned characters or create a custom one. The custom PvP option, besides only offering the skills one has unlocked in PvE, offers a limited selection of weapons and armor at character creation.

PvE also gives one a place to fine tune their skills, try different builds for special situations, and learn the basics of gameplay before proceeding into PvP. For the aspiring PvP expert, this shouldn't be underestimated.

(Edit: I made some comments regarding the economics of trade in PvP, and the possibility of trading between PvE and PvP-only players. They were edited because they were pure speculation, not based on direct experience.)

Not in PvP, no. Why?

Edit: Or maybe you were referring to Kanedafx's comments regarding PvE in general.

Level cap means nothing. Item selection is just fine. Only 5 pieces of armor? OH NO!!! I wouldn't want to use 30 skills in the same battle.

This game is fine. What YOU lack, is scope. The PvP and GuildvGuild system is awesome, you are right. This game has many strengths, and for you to say that PvP is undeniably it's only strength shows true ignorance.

I have checked out WoW, EQ2 and the like. All I have to say is, Can you say GRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIND? I don't want to spend 15 hours a day for months just to get to a decent level. I also don't want to fish for days just to get my skills up.

GW may be ALL about the PvP to you, but that is your opinion, and a very overstated one at that. Their PvE game is fantastic, and only leaves things to be desired if you're a grinding slave WoW or EQ fanboy. GW removed all of the grinding elements of those games, and if that ruins the PvE game for you that is fine. But, you have no right to speak for others as if it were fact.

I LOVE the PVE part of this game (haven't even tried pvp yet, lol). I come form FFXI, WOW, and EQ2. I by far prefer this. I love the graphics, storyline, traveling, no lag, having the land all to myself...I could go on. My only fear as at halfway to max level it will all end soon Hopefully I'll like pvp (never tried it other than minor encounters in WoW). Pve may not be for everyone, but so far I far prefer this over the others. Just wish it had more after 20 ><

I was referring to the general PvE comment

I don't see why you would see the desire for more skills.... more armor.... more more more. You're suffering from the American syndrome. I personally think finding an efficient and tactical way to kill my enemies with limited resources way more entertaining than "oh I remember what spells to use to kill this sorta guy."

As a side note I tried PvP for the first time today with basically my PvE build and rocked it. PvE helped a ton with learning tactics/teamwork. I personally love the new unlocking system for elites... it really doesn't take that long to get to lvl 20... and I don't consider it a grind at all. People get so whiny about an extra couple hours of gameplay.

You've probably seen it before, but many people say that the game begins at 20. Not only for the PvP, but there are many missions and areas that are only available to "ascended" characters(level 20). I doubt you'll be disappointed if you're liking it so far. Alot of people that disliked PvP in other games enjoy it in GW, so you might like it. =)

If WoW or EQ2 were FREE...then you would have an argument. You enjoy paying monthly bills and that's YOUR problem

Until then, let's stop comparing apples to oranges.

A pre made pvp Char will most likely be weaker than a lvl 20 RP char

what the hell is the purpose of this thread?

to tell anyone playing both pvp and pve that they are stupid for doing anything other than pvp?

is it a crime or something to love pvp and love pve?

a better question would be what's the point of pvp characters since rp characters can do everything and pvp characters are restricted to only pvp?

but i would not ask such a stupid question in the first place because i understand what the point is for both pvp and rp characters.

i'd assume this is correct because pvp characters would not have acces to the quality of equipment that pve'rs can get in the game.

when you make a pvp character how are they equipped? do you get to chose from a list of every rare magical item in the game, and do they have access to every elite and rare skill in the game? if not then yes they would be weaker.

Well I confess, my experience with this game is thus far very limited. All I know is I soloed to level 6 and 1/2 in 4 hours. And I only replaced 2 items I was wearing. Once I get to level 20, which will probably take a week or less, I can pass more judgement. But suffice to say, I am 100% certain that PvE is not the strong suite of this game.

And BTW, you never ever have to "grind" in WoW, you can quest your way all the way to 60, just like you can quest all the way to 20 in this game. I know because I've done it. And yeah, it takes longer, but it's not because of "grinding" it's because the PvE game in WoW is much more grande and epic in scope. I don't know why you can't concede this point, the evidence is on my side.

PvP isn't the only strength of this game though. The graphics are superb, I really like them.

Do some missions with a decent party..then when you are around level 14 see if your opinion on the matter has changed.

From the options you're given when you first create a character, my understanding is that a RP character allows you to play from level one, gain and learn skills, explore the game world, craft armor, and basically experience the game until you max out. Choosing a PvP character eliminates all that, because you choose from a set of lvl 20 characters that are designed for 24-7 PvP.

So, it's a choice between playing from scratch or choosing a template lvl 20 to go PvP all the time.

Personally, I'll never choose a PvP character. There is an entire game world to explore, quest in, and play your character with. To me, it seems very lazy to just pick a lvl 20 character to PvP all the time without first having to level and quest with it.
