Offensive name issues
Hello all,
With the recent announcement of offensive names reporting I have come accross a problem. The name that I have chosen (I am not going to post it here so please dont ask) is one that I picked because it amused me. I had no intention of offending anyone and I didnt think I would. Well lo and behold the other day someone whispered me saying that they found my name offensive. I was quite shocked and asked them why but got no reponse. I am worried now that my name will be reported and I will lose my account. I think that many people can be offended by almost anything and to arbitrarily allow people to report names that they find offensive can be a bad thing. Granted, I understand why they have the feature and I can see where they would need it (ie people putting spaces in names to allow a curse word to get past a filter) I guess my main question is...Is there a way to edit my charachter name without starting over. I am pretty advanced in PvE and I do not want to start all over again because someone with no sense of humor reports me. Please help. |

-snicker- What was the name?
They'll probably just make you change the name if it's really that bad. Although if there's a "Rim Job" running around out there, how bad could your name really be? |

My buddy wanted to use the name "Carlos Hath****" (He was a famous sniper in the Vietnam war), but it wouldn't let him. I think you should be able to use any name you want and people can use the ignore feature if they don't like it...

Honestly man, Why couldn't you have just played the game with a name? You don't name your son "Harry Balls" So what the hell? I have no remorse for you. I like walking around and seeing people with names. I can deal with Prince Albert..
But the WTFBBQ names.. and Oh Hit Pwn and Your Momma, honestly, I hope you get banned, this isn't a yahoo chatroom where your name can be SexyNakedLolita1991 honestly, get some RP in your blood and quit being a goddamned newb. -Erod Tanaka -Erod Balitankita |

There is a differance between Carlos Hasa**** and Carlos Hash****.. I don't really give a shit, if you want to be 4 years old and name yourself tigolbitties, go play dice and write your "Role-Playing" name on your goddamned forehead. The term "Role Playing" is interpreted to mean; Acting outside of who you are.. Now.. you can.. theoreticly pretend you're a tree.. But in no way, I don't care you who are.. are you going to pretend that you are LITERALLY "TIGOLBITTIES" I don't understand what the problem is, "neat" intiresting role-playing names aren't THAT hard to make up.. honestly Benaight Wholdit Midonkat Rolndt Cishtat Miktade Boom I just made up 6. Go expand your imagination some and bring some diversity to the game, not some 6 year old school-yard slapstick humor. |

the worst they can do is make you change the name and you are correct that some people will find something that offends them. the so called naked dancing was highly offensive to some people who complained on moral grounds but instead of not playing they complained about their children watching the offensive material |

Your account won't be deleted, but your character very well might be. They won't ask you to change the name, they don't want to get into arguments with people about their names. They'll just nuke it.
Yeah, I love machine automated censors. They never work right. The other day I was trying to talk about how some people talk on the east end of London: they speak with a ****ney accent. What was really funny was, that particular forum didn't replace what it didn't like with stars, it substituted another word, so suddenly I was talking about a Roosterney accent. Not the same thing at all... (Ah yes, I see this is another forum where they don't want us to talk about people born within earshot of the Bow bells...) |

Erod... you're an angry person aren't you?
Don't worry about it too much. Unless they are like that warrior from last night who ran around the Gates to Kryta mission entrance humping people. (Walk behind people and do the warrior dance emote for a few seconds.) If someone did that to me twenty times in a row, I think I'd get a tad bit aggravated. |

[QUOTE=Erod] Benaight - Ben-Aight ("aight" as in Alright, street slang) Wholdit Whole-Dit (that was hard) Midonkat Mi-Don-Kat (DAMN this is killin me) Rolndt Roll-Ndt (I can understand an ill-educated man with no form of knowledge on a german accent would have problems with that one, I appologize for confusing you.) Cishtat Cish-Tat (another killer) Miktade Mick-Tade (damn those are hard) Aside from -Rolndt How are those un pronounceable? Honestly.. E...Rod.. Erod?? E-Rod EEEee-Rod.. That is hard to pronounce, I think you may have been better off claiming that you were 9.. not 29. |

If this game had a roleplaying area then I would enforce a naming policy, but as I see it, the PvP stance of it warrants any name you could possibly want. There is not a single name that you could have in this game that would offend me.

No, I'm actually extremely happy. I just dispise and do not tolerate ignorance, or stupidity. I have an extremly well developed sense of humor and I'm fun to be around, but there are some things that should not be fuddled with.
Boys have a penis Girls have a vagina Dogs pant Cats purr Characters names in video games are not "Tigolbitties" Common knowledge really, I think, or thought, people graduated from adolecent ignorance at around 16, but I guess I was wrong, hence, I'm irritated at peoples lack of respect for the Role-Playing aspect of playing an Online RPG, I would have hoped that all of the 14 year old blizzard fan boys stayed with Diablo 2, but I guess some grow up.. with age, and move on to guild wars to pronounce their love for "tigolbitties" to the latter part of the mature crowd. |

So, all in all, I agree that people should put some thought in to their names and not just go for shock or giggle value. However, there is no way to police that so instead of trying to punish offenders, put the responsibility on the offendees. On top of that, who's to say we're cool for totally making stuff up and their silly for using things like Chesty McTit (he's actually in my guild, lol). It's all perspective. The point is, it's a game. Everyone has a right to have fun. Censorship is a two way street. Basically, if you don't like someone's name, ignore them (I am assuming the ignore feature works well, this may not be the case) |

And in no way am I offended, I don't really care one way or the other. Offending someone, whatever, people who get offended should be kicked in the nuts for being too sensitive. It's an enviornment thing.
What would you do if they changed the gorgeous landscape? The water perhaps, to psychadelic rainbow colors? Ok, so a few people are going to say "That would be awsome man, r0xors my s0xors." Whatever. But in all honesty, it would take away from the medievil, serene look the enviornment has, the same way as these reddiculous names do. |

Be happy that your life is so complete you can waste time and energy attacking other people's names because they don't meet your criteria. Get some amusment out of life, and try to pull that stick out of your derriere before it reaches your brain. Edit: Medieval and serene?? Go study some history. The world is built out of fantasy. If a name is not blatantly offensive who are you to say what is suitable or not? I find the hordes of childish idiots dancing naked and openinly quasi cybering with their collection of flex colored pixels far more grating. But I just add the worst offenders to ignore, and move on. Last edited by Witchfinder General; May 04, 2005 at 06:25 PM // 18:25.. |

But at the same time ANet and NCSoft put no rules regarding RP-play into the terms of agreement. The term "Role Playing Game" does not refer to actual roleplaying anymore. It now encompasses any game that involves leveling a character over time within the game environment. I'd agree 100% with your view on the situation... if this were a World Of Warcraft roleplay server. But since they're are no rules at all regarding that, we don't really have the right to tell others that they're name is stupid. If they like it, and it isn't against ANets terms, then they can use it. ...even if it really -is- stupid. |

Nerds that think they are better than other nerds based on the RP quality of their nerdiness amuse the hell out of me.
25 years of playing RPGs and I still don't understand why some people take it so seriously. And for your naming pleasure: http://rinkworks.com/namegen/ Has a whole host of methods of generating suitable and inoffensive names. Just to make this thread have some use.
